Fresh metal let in just needs a little more shape with the hammer & dolly

so you use a modern filler or lead when preparing for paint?

Has any car ever been so thoroughly restored as this Javelin? Very rarely is the use of the term "epic" appropriate but this thread wears it well.

I'm guessing the strange location of the split and subsequent repair is related to the crash damage.

Both - I use lead initially to get the shape and infill any deep areas - once levelled back I use a very high quality but lightweight filler and only as a skim

Many thanks for the comment John - I just take my time with the repairs and treat the car as if it's my own

It is and wears various other battle scars that have been sustained over the years that have yet to be sorted

Made a start on the door to wing gapping - Javelins as a rule had poor panel fits when they left the factory (the bodies were not built by Jowett but by Briggs at Doncaster) the fully painted & part trimmed bodies were then transported to Bradford for mechanical assembly) - I had a good gap at the top and bottom but was way off in the centre - both door & wing had been on the recieving end of somthing heavy at some stage and replacement panels (other than used) are not available - so I just have to work with what I have - off came the wing (again)

I built up the wing edge with weld then worked it back and kept checking by refitting the wing

Then I had to address the problems at the front of the wing which was some way off alignment with the inner wing

With some hammer & dolly work and a little elongation of some of the mounting holes - a decent fit was achived

The wing had been on & off the car about 15 times in order to get to this stage but its pointless putting paint on a car if every time you sit in it and you can see daylight through the door apperture - worse still if when you open the door and the panel fit is so tight that it takes the paint off the apperture edges

Someone had previously chopped a peice out of the front floor pan to access the gear section linkages

There is a access panel at this point but its just not long enough - so with a pattern made up and allowance for a slightly longer access apperture

Nearly forgot to trial the new side lamp for the wing - the hole had to be opened up slightly
