It actually turned out to be a blockage on the inlet pipe of the pump and therefore as expected the water was not being circulated around the engine. Not sure what caused it. Only thing I can think of is that in the past someone has added a rad sealant and over ...

no I've not put it back. It will go back in when the problem is resolved but for now want to eliminate possible causes. WIthout the thermostat I still have the problem
