Volvo 265GLE

#1 Post by EOO » Thu Oct 25, 2018 7:02 pm

Hi, this is my 1979 volvo 265gle only 3 left on the road now in the uk, and its just past its mot, but now the wife wants the garage back so it may have to go, its first owner was the hon Max Aitken and it has a good number plate, but trying to find a price its value to sell it seems impossible, so it may have to be an auction.

I like these. A lot, but then I went through a Volvo phase and have owned an early (B20 pushrod engined, very scarce in RHD) 244DL, a 142S (also a RHD UK car) and a 144DL, a brace of 245s, pre-1981 so with the round lamps and that massive bumpers, a (1979) 244 GLE with keep fit windows, manual sunroof and no PAS, and a 262 (saloon, not the one with the roof that Bertone's people squished), mine for a week only as it was bought to fund another car.
Is yours the one in your avatar? Any chance of some photos of it please? We like photos round these parts. :)

Oh wow, that looks gorgeous. Any photos of the interior?

Have had a major want of one of this era of Volvo for a couple of decades...however no room at the inn sadly.

Pricing is tricky, as it's such an interesting vehicle. The old Volvos though have always held their value pretty well (that would be the reason I've never had one, never been able to afford one!).

I'd be very surprised at a pricetag anything below a few grand - though it might take a while for the right buyer to turn up. That's a total "number out of the air" estimate though based on what 240s etc were going for when I last looked, and I've no direct experience with the market for old Volvos! Given the rarity of this one though I'd not be surprised if I'm way off the mark.

Owners clubs etc are probably the best source of info, no idea if there's somewhere like the UKSaabs forums but for Volvos... I'd imagine so though, and they might have something closer resembling an idea what it's worth.

If I'd the space and the cash though I'd have your arm off...

A few more pictures, it has only done 67000 miles with lots of paper work history, I am its 3rd owner, its first was sir max Aitken, I have been trying to find pictures of him with the car, but no luck yet, the 2nd was my friend then me, so I can say I know it has been well looked after.

Wow, that's a high spec car for the time too, air con must have been an expensive option back then.

That's a truly gorgeous car. That's the best generation of interior I reckon, I far prefer that to the later one where they rounded stuff off and ditched the industrial switchgear...

 Oh yes, that is indeed a thing of great loveliness. I'm calling dibs in case you should catch some form of brain infection that makes you decide to sell! ;)
Seriously though, I could easily accommodate another 240 (or 260 but I'm not too fussy as either can provide lots of driving enjoyment for something so sensible looking. The conventional beam axle on these made their handling utterly safe and predictable, with oversteer on tap when required  but not to the detriment of the car's stability.
What were they thinking when they did the 740/940? Did the person who designed its rear suspension never think about something not broken not needing to be "fixed"? Had that person even driven an older Volvo and learned from that? Fine cars though the front wheel drive Volvos are turning out to be, the 240 shape was , IMHO of course, the Volvo for which the company will be remembered above most others in their back catalogue.

So where do you think the best place to sell a classic car, any advice where to sell or what it may be worth, and should I sell its number plate separate.

Realistically, the enthusiast forums for the marque would be my first port of call I guess for getting realistic valuation, and probably the place you'll be likely get a low hassle sale. Probably carandclassic would be the next spot I'd try. At least last time I was looking at selling stuff it seemed to be the more serious buyers on there rather than the time wasters elsewhere...no idea if that's still true.

The places I'd avoid based on the total and utter pain selling anything there has been anywhere vaguely recently would be Gumtree or eBay. Even trying to give stuff away on Gumtree for free was a royal pain...
