Mobility Astra Mk1 Kadett D Estate Time-lapse added

#1 Post by SpaceKadett » Sat Apr 21, 2018 7:17 am

Here’s an introduction to my next project which I have to do a bit of advance work on now for it’s import inspection. It’s a wheel chair accessible Kadett with a special high roof and lowered floor. https://youtu.be/EM4XyZgRWX0

Here's the time-lapse of the overall project https://youtu.be/gucXJRxHmf8

Absolutely effing brilliant! That ticks so many boxes (unusual vehicle, import, wheelchair friendly & made from bits that you're already familiar with..) .
Can I be the only person who's looking at the car and thinking that, if the time comes when its chair toting capability isn't a priority, would it not make a very useful campervan? In fact, given that the chair goes up the centre of the floor, you could have folding beds for two, sink, hob, etc, and still be able to carry the chair and its user. There's even "upstairs" space for a couple of kids' bunks, and when the wheelchair isn't on board, what a great way to transport a motorcycle!
I've seen similar things based around Escorts and miniMetros, but the shape of the Kadett lends itself so much better to the task.
Another of your youtube video threads added to my favourites list!

All your ideas have been running around my head also. Going through the car and seeing how well it's been looked after, shows you the importance of it's original purpose. I may give it modular camping capabilities but keep it so that it can be returned to the wheelchair purpose, I'm going to look into whether I can get insurance to cover bringing people with restricted mobility on classic car runs an maybe other events. That floorspace would be ideal for a battery array of an EV conversion too.

I don't think it quite has the length for a motorbike inside. Here's the video of my first little drive in it

After a quick power wash before bringing this car into the garage I'm feeling a lot more optimistic about this project. I have to have it ready for August.

Certainly is looking good, as you say. August you reckon? I'm thinking more like June, given your work rate with the other projects you've posted on the forum.
Got to get my own pressure washer out now, thanks for the inspiration.

Seanan, I've just subscribed purely on the strength of this particular project. It shouldn't take much to get it through the NCT. You'll need RHD headlamps but I'm sure you've got a set somewhere.

Thanks for that Toledo Man, I hadn't actually thought of that so you might have saved me a bit of bother at the test. I might have thought of it when I went checking the beam before I go, but I might not have. I have this pair that came of Gina...and more :D

Registering the Mobility Astra Mk1 Kadett D in Ireland and getting a really nice set of pressed aluminium plates from eireplates.com who also do really cool German style numbers as well.
