1952 Jowett Javelin
Well it had to happen, being a member of the Jowett Car Club and owning 2 non running Jowetts which collectively are in many, many pieces, due to the day job, restoration of a fellow members Jowett Javelin, house move, life in general & SWMBO they are unlikely to hit the road for a few years yet - so what I needed was a decent runner - or a good solid car that could be a rolling restoration - rarely do Jowetts of this condition appear on the market. In the main they tend to be cars that require a complete restoration in the FOC - £1500 bracket or really nice, well presented - award winners in the £8 - £10k + rising bracket.
We have been aware of a decent car that may come to the market for a couple of years now - so we just kept it quiet - then recently a call came in from the elderly club member stating that he had clutch problems with the car could we help ? - I was very busy with the day job at the time so my Jowett sparing partner 'Keith' was despatched (Keith is retired so has more time on his hands than me) - The engine / box went in & out of the car 3 times before the problems were resolved but eventually the clutch gearbox problem was resolved.
Conversation ensued and cut a long storey short the car was purchased and brought back to the workshop (The owner was advancing in years and with knee problems was now finding the car difficult to drive)
So here she is 1952 Jowett Javelin - A largely original car - images taken on the workshop 2 post lift whilst we fettle her - the car has been stood for a couple of years so the brakes were seized - tyre sidewalls were all cracked and beyond legal road use - wear in the OSF king pin & distance tube - OSF shocker is US - exhaust blowing & brackets not attached - some wayward wiring in places - plus various odds to sort.
On the good news front the engine & gearbox have just - and I mean just - been rebuilt prior to the purchase - in fact the drive into the workshop was the first time that the engine had been used as motive power since the rebuild. More to follow later on what stage we have got to but must shoot off and crack on with the Early Javelin restoration (covered on a separate thread)

Very original interior but showing its age - the Jowett steering wheels tend to self decompose with the plastic distorting and going out of shape - I have a good spare that requires a small repair that I shall sort and paint up Shim bodge revealed on the distance tube which was re-bushed and a new bolt fitted, new shocker & king pin also fitted on the OS £750 worth of new cross plys

Paint on the NSR wing was dreadful and no way was it going to clean up to a presentable standard
so it got flatted back and painted up Other jobs done were levels / fluids checked, battery isolator fitted, odd headlamps changed for a matched pair from our spares stock, front indicators sorted, grease round all points prior to a good clean of the paint & chrome prior to touching up and paint chips and a good waxing - giving a end result 1937 Jowett 8 - Project - in less pieces than the Jupiter

Re: Classic Fleet Addition (Addiction) ??
More Javelins survive in black than any other colour and I want to livery the car to demonstrate that the cars were pressed into use not just as a family car (3 were put to use in Jersey as police cars) - My late stepfather had a taxi business for a substantial period of time and I have decided to livery the car in memory of him and the former business that he ran
In time I will livery the doors in cream with black sign writing to match how he liveried the fleet in the 60's - but for now I needed a period cab for a special job - more to follow soon1937 Jowett 8 - Project - in less pieces than the Jupiter

The main reason for sorting the car quickly was to have it ready for The Goodwood Revival, we had agreed to provide a fleet of Jowetts for the event as part of our 90th anniversary celebrations - the fleet would provide a taxi service to ferry VIP / Celebrities between the course and the 2 hotels on the Goodwood estate.
18 cars made up the fleet and worked all the way through the event to delighted passengers the VIP / Celeb list included: Stirling Moss, Tiff Needell, Zara Phillips & Mike Tindall, Tony Brooks, Murray Walker, Jochen Mass, Damon Hill & many more all chauffeured in a Jowett.1937 Jowett 8 - Project - in less pieces than the Jupiter
