Crankshaft bearing arrangement Riley Aster Crest

I'm doing some work with the Riley Archive Trust in the UK who are trying to recreate an original engine from 1898 but all they have is a vague image of the single cylinder engine from the early 20th century - the car and engine no longer exist.

The image suggests a horizontal split on the crankshaft axis. I'm currently trying to come up with a workable manufacturing proposal for the crankshaft bearing arrangement. Would the bearing have been plain or ball at that time?

Any comments, links, images, suggestions for further investigation gratefully received.
