If it's the same Nissan sourced engine as found in some black taxis then you're a lucky barsteward. Renault Diesels have appeared in some Nissans too, such as that 3 cylinder 1.5 in the Qumquat. I love a three cylinder Diesel, especially Mercedes' own OM660 as found in Smarts For Two, some motorcycles and a light aircraft. But apart from that old taxi engine, proper "old school" in the way of the naturally aspirated L series Toyotas, the others I mentioned are all common rail and need electricity to work.
Oh, and I always enjoy The King & I, but that whistling is average so I went on the internet and found something much more like the van's type of Diesel-sourced music and found a video that reflects the sort of music that the village's most complained about motor caravan (f'kwit neighbour over the road who doesn't have much love for cars that aren't new, shiny and dull) wants to make if I can find the old rogue a recording contract:
https://youtu.be/2Y33bTlAA-E OK, so that Cummins turbo jobby is idling far too quickly , Yoda would be doing around 50mph in high range o/d top if his motor was spinning that rapidly, but I could see the two of them somehow creating some sort of harmony. Meanwhile, I have d*wnl*ad*d the Cummins' soundtrack as this will be perfect for getting me to sleep.
No? OK, maybe he could play among a tractor-based band?

To be honest, i have no idea what engine it is... im just happy its running... its a 120 dxi so ive been told...
Re: Annoying whistle, 1992 Toyota HiAce engine..
Still think my favourite of diesel music you're likely to come across over here has to be a Cummins L10 with a relatively free flowing exhaust (in this case because most of the baffles had disintegrated).

Hard to beat a Detroit 6-71 though...yeah the V6/8s sound fantastic too...though the straight six is so smooth it's downright uncanny.
Quite happy with this little 2.3 unit for my uses though.

Found it... here's a video of a Detroit 6-53 (so six cylinder in line, 53 cubic inches per cylinder) being driven in anger.

Makes me really sad that the big two stroke diesels never really caught on over here for road applications. A few have obviously been imported over the years, and there's *something* quite local to us which is Detroit powered...but as yet I've not seen what it is...always just heard it howling along the road just out of sight.
Yes I know we had some...Foden had some technically similar engines to the Detroit (albeit with more conventional fuelling control) but they were never hugely popular for road haulage applications as far as I'm aware, finding more of a home in the marine fields. The Commer and Leyland opposed piston engines are also worth a mention...but I've yet to ever actually come across either of those in the real world.
I was lucky enough to have a shot of a proper long nose Peterbuilt tractor unit one day which had had a Detroit 12V71 shoehorned under the bonnet. Not unlike this one...There was a tunnel nearby...yes, we made *several* passes through there. Confused someone in a Corsa when their drainpipe sized exhaust got drowned out by something far more exciting sounding.

Re: Annoying whistle, 1992 Toyota HiAce engine..
I'm almost duty bound to post a clip of a TS3 going flat out up a hill since forum tradition dictates that we should gather to enjoy that distinctive howl, bettered only by the sound of a Deltic locomotive ( https://youtu.be/1DIY4FhRp4c ) pulling a train up an incline, but I reckon that as British 2 stroke Diesels go, this is my new favourite:

I ought to get a recording of Yoda being spanked mercilessly but am usually concentrating on driving. Hmm...

Ooh... that's a new one one me, knew of the FD6 (as mentioned in my last post I think), but hadn't come across a four cylinder version before. That does sound lovely indeed, has a really mean bark to it. Bet it sounds even better under load.JPB wrote: ↑Tue Jun 30, 2020 10:06 pmI'm almost duty bound to post a clip of a TS3 going flat out up a hill since forum tradition dictates that we should gather to enjoy that distinctive howl, bettered only by the sound of a Deltic locomotive ( https://youtu.be/1DIY4FhRp4c ) pulling a train up an incline, but I reckon that as British 2 stroke Diesels go, this is my new favourite:
