Filler plug Triumph stag manual box

#1 Post by Young Farmer » Sun Dec 17, 2017 11:12 am

Last night at our car club dinner I was asked where the filler plug on a Stag manual gearbox is. The owner had attempted to change the engine oil but drained the gearbox!!! I haven't seen this car, or done anything with Stags so couldn't answer the question. On this car there is a bolt with a nut on it in the left hand side of the box. The chap who asked the question is reluctant to remove this bolt in case it is securing the innards. My guess is that someone has knackered the filler plug and has used a bolt to replace it. Any body out there who knows the answer?

AFAIK the filler plug is a square, 7/16" IIRC, and they can be tight, so you can buy a special spanner cheaply if an OE spanner won't shift it. The nut could be the pivot for the reverse selector fork.....

Thanks for the reply Harvey. I have advised the owner to ring one of the Triumph specialists advertising in the magazine. I don't want to get involved with this one as a retired fitter had gone with the the now owner to see the car. He had been advised that if he shakes his head to not buy the car. Despite vigorous head shaking the chap still bought the car because he had negotiated a £2k discount and thought he had a bargain!!
