1988 Ford Transit engine advice

Hi

I maybe buying a nice motorhome from Italy with a 2.5 diesel lump in it. Its relatively low millage but is pre bannana engine and I was hoping some wise fellows here may have some advice or knowledge on them?

As far as I can work out its a non turbo 2.5 DI with the Lucas pump - how strong are these engines and is there anything i should be aware of?

I am happy to get my hands dirty and have lived with a 1984 sherpa to prove my point :)

i had the 2.5 banana engine in my transit, it leaked oil everywhere was noisy.. i abused & overloaded that van for 10 years the body went rusty brakes went in the end & i sold it to an north african chap.. its probably still running about over there.. engine gearbox etc were solid just the body didn't age well..i miss my old blue van :(

Hi

Hopfully, if i have figured out how to attach pictures, is a before and after of my old Sherpa. She was hand painted and took allot of preparation but I think it paid off! She proved to be a reliable old van in the end and took me weekly between Suffolk and Lincoln without any major problems. Only time she left me stranded and requiring recovery was when the points went in the distributor.
I recently saw her for sale on ebay, the paint work had held up but the inside had been "modified" and wasnt as good as the original Autosleeper conversion.

Well I brought the 1989 transit and once its had a coat of waxoyl I will be driving her to southern spain and back in the summer and then again at Christmas.... Looking forward to having another vehicle to add to stables (currently own a mk1 Mx5 (awaiting restoration) and a 300tdi Defender)

No doubt ill be asking for Ford based advice soon!

I have a lot of love for the Sherpa, their time had probably come long before they eventually ceased to be built but there was something essentially good in the idea of taking a well-respected existing van (J4), moving its engine from between the seats to the hastily tacked on extension upfront, ditching the J4's independent suspension in favour of a beam and giving it a new name. Modern vans are much more efficient but far too much so to be entertaining to drive, IMHO.

All applicants for jobs with Hermes, Yodel and the other companies who bring our eBay tat to the doors should be made to drive a Sherpa from the bottom to the top of Berwick on the typically icy roads we have to put up with in the winter. Only those who demonstrate an ability to bring their Sherpa back to the employer's premises intact, upright and undamaged should then be given the jobs driving the current Transits and Sprinters, a move that would reduce rear end shunts to private motorists' vehicles by 72% at a stroke. Probably.

Thanks for the thumbnails, that looks like an honest old van.
