Today's no1 job was to demolish the pantry. So after putting a sledge hammer through it (very satisfying btw, I highly recommend demolishing walls to vent frustration) SWMBO went out to get something for dinner, i took the opportunity to whip out my soldering iron

The wire is about 1" shorter than it was before after trimming the nibbled ends back a bit and soldering it together. I had to fix 1 wire about a foot back up the wire but I can now turn the headlamps off with the battery connected :)
One earth wire fixed and now all the column switches work.
Now I know the drivers side rear cluster is still dead (not surprising), the passenger side front indicator doesn't work and it's not the bulb but it's definitely better than every light on and no way of turning them off :)
I removed all the crud from the foot well too, its still a mouldy mess in there but less of a mouldy mess than it was. VW appear to have used torx bolts but with twice as many points to bolt the seats in so i need to order a set of those then they can all go in a skip, the only one that may be saveable is the passenger front seat, the rest are nibbled to death. The airbag warning is being caused by the wiring to the drivers seat having been nibbled through so no side airbag and no pre-tensioner.
I'm hoping to get some time to work on it in the evenings but i have a week off at the end of the month while the building is re-wired so i should get at least a couple of days of that to spend working on cars assuming the other half doesn't want any more walls removed.

I'll take a snap of my new almost completed car house in the light tomorrow.
I may replace the loom, It depends how much damage there is once i get the dash out so i can get a proper look. A few connectors spliced don't bother me, so far barring 2 wires, all the damage has been right next to connectors so I don't think they are a problem and fixing them is easy and cheaper / easier than replacing the whole body loom. If it needs a lot of work i'm sure a replacement can't be that hard to find.

Fingers crossed I don't have too much more DIY demanded of me this weekend and i'm able to get a couple of hours to pull the dash out. The lower dash is now out on both sides, the centre removed, just the console to go then i think it's just a few nuts to undo and the whole thing should come out.
On the passenger side the switch that turns the passenger airbag on/off is nibbled off as is the glove box light. There were lots of nibbled short bits of wire behind the glove box. My initial thought that the airbag warning was just the drivers seat was definitely wrong but this is just another connector to solder back on, not a big deal.
I think i'm going to go for a replacement interior in cloth rather than leather purely because the extra cost of heated leather seats isn't going to be reflected in the sale price. If i was keeping it, i would go the whole hog but this is just to save a car i know to be good from being broken for parts and put it back on the road for someone at a reasonable price. I quite like fixing things and other than this being REALLY dirty, it's not particularly difficult to work on, it's really well made, every connector is good quality and once you find where the hidden screws are it all comes apart easily.
I'm also procrastinating from doing any more welding on the RR as i hate doing bodywork.

Dash is out, car is running :)

The airbag warnings are because there are no airbags in the car at present, the a/c errors are because it's all disconnected as is the radio, no steering wheel, etc. the loom to the passenger door hasn't been repaired yet so that side is dead but the drivers side is all good :)
The errors that concern me are the sensor for oil level / temperature, the steering angle sensor, the engine codes and the brake switch as the brake lights were stuck on until I repaired a section of loom and now they don't work.

Still plenty to do. I've got to pull the remainder of the interior out to check the rest of the wiring inside then give it a good bleaching.

For anyone else that has a MK5 golf, a normal OBDII reader won't work, but you can use the free version of the carista app to read your faults. you have to pay for it to clear them.

This situation must have changed at some point, Dad's Jetta, an 07 plate with the 1.9 Pumpe Düse engine, connected via my elm327 BT dongle (the "official" one sold by the software author) to Android devices running the subscription version of Ian Hawkins' Torque app with no trouble at all. The app recognised the car and all of the peripheral guff, such as the track maps, ran smoothly.

(Ironically, although Torque was written specifically for the Mercedes-Benz OM660 Diesel engined Smart ForTwos because Ian Hawkins' personal transport was one of these, the PIDs for that car had to be assigned manually yet that Jetta, my '05 Toyota bB and the Previa pool cars ('03-'08) at work all connect and have everything recognised instantly. We used to think that this was Benz being fussy about letting non-franchised workshops have STAR access, yet the app also worked out of the box with the C Class of the same era).

Hi John,
My ebay special ELM327 and the paid for version of torque connect and work for live data but don't show any faults. A cheapo OBDII reader is the same, connects and shows no faults.
This other handy app (with the same ELM327) will read fault codes for free. The paid for version can clear them (including ABS and SRS). I haven't tried it yet but it can also change settings like mirror auto-dipping, door automatic locking when put in gear, etc.
