Re: Automatic Transmission harsh shifting.
Thats what I meant about upsetting people with an opinion...
Good topic for a conversation though...
From experience. Back in the 70's, the place I worked for used to have a number of Chevy Pickups. They were always giving problems. About 1975 or so, the first Dodge pickups were bought. Nothing ever seemed to go wrong with those. By the time I left in '82, there wasnt a Chevy in the place, and the mechanics had an easy life!

That's funny. In 2016 here in Texas I see 1st to 3rd gen C10s all the time. Sometime the odd 60s to 80s Ford but NEVER a Dodge. Maybe once in a blue moon.

Where's Harvey when you need him (the resident autobox guru)? I would second the suggestion of flushing the transmission and making sure that you use the correct transmission fluid.

Thought this might interest you, especially the quote at the start! :alabbasi wrote:That's funny. In 2016 here in Texas I see 1st to 3rd gen C10s all the time. Sometime the odd 60s to 80s Ford but NEVER a Dodge. Maybe once in a blue moon.

I'm familiar with a Torque flight. I own a British car that uses it. You just have to ask a hotrodder. The important thing about a TH400 is that it's very strong and there are lots of good aftermarket rebuild kits for it and they're not expensive. I had one rebuilt and it cost me $600 (here in TX) including removal and install and a 1 year 12k mile warranty.
My current workhorse is a 99 Chevy C2500 with a 5.7 Vortec and a 4l80E. Again a fantastic transmission and much stronger then anything Dodge put into their trucks during the 80's-2000's which have a reputation for failing.

I don't know anything about those boxes, so keeping quiet seems to be the best option.
All I would say is make sure it has the correct fluid set to the correct level, if it has a vacuum modulator make sure there aren't any vac leaks, and if it has a cable make sure it's correctly adjusted.
Currently over 35 years worth of fixing 35 boxes.
Hoping to reach 65 years worth of fixing 65 boxes.

Re: Automatic Transmission harsh shifting.
Hi,
I followed the advice of fluhing the gearbox, unfortunately with no improvement.
The fluid used has always been a Dexron III type. Originally GM prescribed Dexron II, but when that became Dexron III, they claimed that it should pose no problem to use the new fluid.
Generally, older Rolls Royces with a TH400 gearbox use Dexron III without problems.
So, back to square one. I might check the valve body next.

Re: Automatic Transmission harsh shifting.
Dextron III should be backwards compatible. Still thinking that there is a vacuum issue.Get on a Chevy forum. People there will tell you everything there is to know about that transmission. Don't tell them it's for a Rolls Royce, they'll start making Grey Poupon Jokes
