Led interior lights "fadeout" (or not)

#1 Post by TerryG » Mon Jun 08, 2015 3:32 pm

I have replaced my puddle lights and interior lights with LED bulbs, with "traditional" bulbs my interior lights fade out 15 seconds after closing the doors. With LED bulbs they just turn off (after 15 seconds).
Is there a specific type of LED I need to get that can fade or is it not something LEDs can do?

It's quite easy to make the sort of array you need, details are on this page. I've built that circuit myself a few times now for people who want their household LED lamps to work from faders in the same way as tungsten filament or halogen lighting does.
Simply substitute the car's courtesy lamp supply for the potentiometer in the schematic, using whatever different passive values are required to make up for any difference in the pot's range.

Good old Maplin, they're not the cheapest and they don't keep a massive range of 630 Volt rated caps for my old telly resto work but when they chose the locations for their stores, they sure knew what they were doing! Blast you, Maplin, for your exploitation of the passing trade!

Work will order me small components from RS but they only order in the last week of the month and I need something to do tomorrow morning when I should be reading reports.

Why didn't they just buy dimmable LED lamps? Anyone retrofitting LED lamps at home should read this http://www.electricalsafetyfirst.org.uk ... uide-9.pdf

LED domestic lighting was still in its infancy back then and those arrays that were available in retail outlets were white, so far too sore on the eyes even if run at lower intensity. One of these went to someone who wanted amber diodes to replicate the warm glow of tungsten filament lamps, most since have gone to folk who saw my RGB arrays and wanted something equally annoying for their own homes.
