AP Auto transmission problem, advice please

#1 Post by Avrs » Sun May 05, 2013 7:39 am

Hi, I have a 1974 Austin VDP (Allegro shape) but the car is reluctant to move at more than a crawl.

In park or neutral, all is fine, engine revs freely but put it in gear, any gear' and no matter what you do with the throttle, the car just slowly crawls along. Eventually it will pick up speed but it's so slow.

Th car has only done 21k miles from new. Has been off road for some time until feb.

Anyone got any knowledge on these auto boxes. Know what's wrong, what might sort it, or is it a rebuild job?

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Del.

Yes I do, I know enough to leave them alone.....

All I would suggest is making sure the kickdown link is correctly fitted, and if it is on there maybe try adjusting (read: shortening) it a bit. Other than that, you're on your own. I had a mate who knew all about them, and he did any that I got roped into, but he's not available ATM, or for the forseeable future for that matter.

Thanks guys.

Things have improved a bit. I jacked the front up, stuck it on axle stands, put it in drive and floored it. Ran it at 40 mph for 5 miles and it seems better, far better. I've even got kickdown. Still sluggish as **** from standstill, but then it is an Allegro at the end of the day. Once I get the log book back, I'll tax it and take it for a good blast.

Cheers.

I'm assuming that you're using it as an automatic? Don't, that way performance will be much, much better.

It sounds like a forward clutch issue, but it may have merely been sludge in the valve body. These boxes are very sensitive to skipped oil changes.

Silly question I know, but are you sure that you're pulling away in 1st gear? Can you manually select the gears and, if so, does it change the performance?

Yes, it is certainly possible the O/P has a maladjusted shifter cable. An AP auto will even pull away in "3", but very slowly.
