Ok. i have a diagram thats worse than useless, showing an e34 engine loom into an e30...thinking it couldnt be to far off an e36, but very few of my e34 wires are the same on the diagram.
but side by side I have this, e34 (m60 V8) on the left e36 (m42 4 pot) on the right.
now could it be just fate thats all the wires line up? colour for colour, pin for pin?
and if it is, what do the 4 high lighted wires do, where do they connect?
also pin 7 on the e34 loom is a hick green, and on the e36 its a thin one,,,,any ideas?

Re: bmw engine wiring help v8 swap
Different location of the relay that switches that circuit in the two cars would explain that.bubs wrote:pin 7 on the e34 loom is a hick green, and on the e36 its a thin one,,,,any ideas?

Re: bmw engine wiring help v8 swap
lol, but what is pin 7 on the e34 loom, and what is pin 7 on the e36
Re: bmw engine wiring help v8 swap
okily dokily, I joined like for like, as best that it would
on the e34 end I have 5 wires that dont line up either to colour or pin
pins
01 blu/wht
02 blu/wht possibly pale yellow
03 thick red/wht
do not line up to the e36 plug, the e36 plug has no wiers in pins 1,2,3
pin 23 on the e34 end is brown with green trace, where pin 23 on the e36 end is brown with a grey trace.
and pin 7 on the e34 end is thick green, and pin 7 on e36 end is a thin green.
now on the e36 end, i have a fuel pump wire pin 13 that goes to a relay Siemens V23134-K59-X170 with 12.62-1735424 on it, on this realy i have 3 unconnected wires, a thick red, a thin red/white and a thin brown/green. where the fuel relay wire (pin13) goes into this realy, a thin green magenta comes out and goes to another relay Siemens V23134-K59-X222 with 61.36-8366600 on it, of this relay i have another 3 unconnected wires , a thin brown/green, a thin green and a thin red/white....
any help greatly appreciated

Re: bmw engine wiring help v8 swap
if it's the same as english wire colours.......... (that's a BIG IF)
blue/white are main beams
red/white is ignition signal to the starter motor solenoid
don't know about brown/black
one of those relays is for the fuel pump? then the one with the red/white wire might be the starter solenoid relay?
green magenta is usually a fused 12V feed, does things like injectors and stuff. so there might be a relay for everything that's joined to that supply...
where have these wires come from, are they engine bay ones or behind the dash?
which are power feeds and which are signal in and signal out on the relays?
when I did the midget, I got away with not connecting all that much stuff, I can send you a wiring diagram that will probably not be any help if you like....
what's your loom situation - have you got the whole think out of the beemeer including lamp circuits and everything, 'cos i had all that in the midget already so only really had to wire the engine in...
'tis a fantastic project, the wiring was the bit i dreaded on mine.

Re: bmw engine wiring help v8 swap
the cars wiring is complete bmw head lights to tail lights.
the 1.8 was taken out, and the wiring is 1 twist block connector, and the wiring stays with the engine.
the 3.0 was taken out of the 5 series, the engine keeps the ecus, and has a twist connector and the feed stays hard wired into the car lool, so i traced out 3 foot of wires and then cut em.
I had a guy come round the other day, and we took the engine loom of the engine altogether, and he's taken that away now to have a play, so fingers crossed
