p6s...?

#1 Post by rockdemon » Fri Jun 14, 2013 5:56 pm

Hi,

In the latest issue they talk about a few things p6. On the servicing article the immediate thing that jumps out is there's no mention that running on 20/50 with low zddp will knacker the cam... Popular classis oils like comma classic and halfords classic are offenders on this front!

In the other article the cam get's changed without the followers... The cam isn't likely to last long as they bed in as a pair....

edit - sorry followers without the cam...

Comma and Halfords green 20w50 is one and the same and the ZDDP levels are the least of your worries with that stuff as the amount of glycerine-based oil seal "restorer" in there will soften old seals, yes, but it'll also wreck fresh ones.

One of the reasons for modern engines' longer service lives is modern engine oil, a fact that the guys along the row in the tribology block at work never tire of pointing out to the rest of us mortals.
Don't fret but. There are decent "classic" oils such as those provided by Smith & Allan, Morris and Valvoline, to name a few. The way that our students are taught to do it is to use a decent, modern oil and if the ZDDP is below the requirement bv for that engine, then use an additive that contains the extra needed. Just don't buy it from this bloke:
