Galaxy

Got something to say, but it's not classic related? Here's the place to discuss. Also includes the once ever-so-popular word association thread... (although we've had to start from scratch with it - sorry!)

Galaxy

#1 Post by Dick » Mon Jan 25, 2021 8:38 pm

Hi chaps, as some of you may know im the proud owner of of a 04 ford galaxy.. she's got 172 000 miles on the clock and ive recently spent a small fortune on brakes tyres suspension & a oil and filters change..she's a comfy old bus and cheaper to run than my tipper, plus the radio still gets radio 4!
Anyway today i was merging onto a dual carriageway and as i accelerated i lost all power.. the engine still run and i limped off at the next exit and she wouldn't do more than 30 mph... in the end i turned the engine off and restarted and everything is ok.. ive a mate with a dying sharan that suffers from the same problem..
Any ideas what might be wrong?

Not remotely, no, but as it's old enough not to have a DPF (assuming Diesel?), then there'd be at least one thing that's not causing it to go limp on you.. Maybe a couple of Viagra in the tank would help!

:scared: ;)

Oh bumhats, double post happened somehow. That'll teach me to type rather than depending on bloody lazy VTT software, but in my defence even a larger phone would have been hard to see.

Rich, it's going into limp home mode - this is usually caused by the ECU detecting a fault that it can't cope with, usually a sensor failure, so it puts all the ignition and injection parameters into a default state that allows the engine to run, (and "limp you back home") but with reduced power. Is the engine management light on? If not, it should be, is the bulb functioning? (i.e. lit when you first turn the ignition on). In any event, you need to get a scanner on it and see what codes are stored, if there are several the usual routine is to clear them all, run the car and see what comes back. This will give you a very good clue as to what direction to look in - if you just guess, then this almost always turns out to be time consuming and expensive, as well as running the risk of introducing fresh faults. Your car will be OBDII compliant, so any generic scanner will work, or any decent garage will be able to do it for you.
Some people are like Slinkies - they serve no useful purpose, but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them downstairs.

Thanks chaps! Its a 1.9 tdi.. there isnt any lamps showing so I'll have a look with the code reader this weekend.. by the way a mechanic friend who replaced the drive shaft gaiter recently pointed out that the turbo is leaking oil, or as i prefer to call it the external lubrication system.. either way he wasn't overly concerned.. i just want to get another year out of it before I replace the old girl..

Hmm, good luck with that, here's a link that explains why yours may not be OBD2 compatible. https://www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post ... m?t=104977 .
Flaming VAG brands, using their own protocols and making the adapters. Bosch ones, no snide ELM327 dongles will communicate with this engine unless you're looking for a suspected EGR issue, they find those even when they're not there!

Hi chaps, ive just bought the vw sharan that took me to Rouen and near Calais.. it had a new turbo about 80 k miles ago.. is it an easy swap? The one on my galaxy still works but is leaking oil badly, so i thought id rob it for bits before it goes to the local scrappy...

Hi chaps.. I recently scrapped the sharan, I saved the turbo and several other bits including the drivers door wiring loom... Ive already repaired the one on my galaxy 4 time, and it needed doing again.. central locking was playing silly buggers.. so I swapped them over, but the socket in the post was wobbly, everything was working fine... it was wonderful for 2 whole days.. so once again I stripped out the dash again glued the socket into place plugged in the harness and nothing.. strip down door pulled out the harness and several wires had broken. Temper was lost harness out and i repaired the original refitted.. door and dash rebuilt and everything it working again... for now
