What are you listening to now? (in the musical sense..)

Got something to say, but it's not classic related? Here's the place to discuss. Also includes the once ever-so-popular word association thread... (although we've had to start from scratch with it - sorry!)

What are you listening to now? (in the musical sense..)

OK, so having noticed that the world's sole remaining car forum** - other than this one - has a What Are You Listening To? thread, I thought "Meh, why not?" and posted this.

So, I am currently listening to Patsy Cline's soppy ballad "I fall to pieces" on a playlist that I found in an SD card that I fished out of a drain recently for the lovely Fiona, who had lost it from a pocket hole. Now, I hadn't played any Patsy Cline in ages but tonight, with both the sis-in-law-beast and the recently appointed significant other out on the sauce, I put Patsy's "Definitive Collection" on via some gadgets that can make sounds happen, then fell asleep. But what a voice, eh.. In an annoyingly bent, yet soulful sort of way. Heather thinks of Ms Cline as a "white Etta James substitute" but she's wrong. A rare thing, to be frank.

The tune is at the following link: https://youtu.be/iuZTk1hdpMs

**- That car forum being Club xB, the interplanetary forum and club for those who have come to appreciate the simple joy of Toyota's tall, rectangular spiritual successor to the Austin Maxi (based on the cars' almost identical length, even better than Maxi-like interior space and blessed with an even less comfortable bed..)

My musical tastes are going to bore you. Being a teenager of the 1960's you might think that it's all Beatles, Rolling Stones and all that. Nope!
But when Patsy Cline was belting out Crazy, I was starting out learning how to dance, something that I have kept up all my life. Dancing as in Latin & Ballroom with a bit of gymnastic Rock & Roll as a crowd pleaser. Growing older, with a few aches and pains along the way, our Rock & Roll stays firmly on the ground these days. But we have a dance teacher, whose getting on a bit herself, she knows what we mean by crowd pleaser, she has taught us the most rude, erotic dirty dance that you have ever seen since The Lambada. (we do that too) And when do get up to do it, we hump and grind to Etta James.

Right now though, whilst typing this, I'm listening to Chris Barber.

Wow! Rich, "proper job, me boots!" (Excuse the crude attempt to come over all bilingual, but I might have to go to something called the "South West" some time, who knows, but if I do, then I need to know how to ask for a decent mushroom fritter supper in a strange chipper).

GHT, So although we're never going to align our views on the finest BL cars of the seventies, it seems that Etta James' appeal is universal. I know people in their twenties who consider the great lady's vocal output to be worthy of its many appreciative listeners and now, as Python fans would say, ad nauseam possibly; for something completely different from an absolute icon whose tunes get right into one's soul during long car journeys with this, his signature tune, blasting out, the subwoofer under the passenger side of the front seat recreating passably the ceilidh atmosphere, but in a car:

When southern schools were having end of year discotheques, North Northumberland and the schools to the west and north of the border were having end of year ceilidhs, with a real accordion & fiddle ensemble that would include our chemistry teacher among their number. I found that band on youtube, but wouldn't give the old bugger the satisfaction of the free publicity, so instead, some more of that local music, for local people ;) :

Why does Ray Jackson's face look as if someone whacked it with a frying pan? Most odd..

Coming up next on my solid state jukebox, Ska & Skinhead Reggae legends The Dualers (I wish they'd get on and dual the A1 while they're at it..):

John, not all of my musical tastes go back generations, your post about The Duellers prompted a reminisce about Si & Ty Cranstoun. You need to look them up. Meanwhile Si has been carving a name out for himself on the nostalgia circuit with his own music, the man blows me away.

GHT, that voice is, as the viewers' comments suggest, as if Jackie Wilson himself was the singer.
Who else remembers when Reet Petite was at number one in the top 40 and the Beeb put up a large background image of darts legend Jockie Wilson when the song was being played to that week's "Top of the pops" studio audience?
Seriously, that actually happened!

Rich, the sheep in that clip have left me disturbed in the old noggin. Please round them up and pop 'em back in your freezer.
I couldn't be arsed to slow the French words on that other tune down so that I'd stand a chance of translating on the fly, but on the same youtube page, I found a really nice tune, also by some foreign folk so I have no idea what they're singing about..
Anyone got the time, my watches all say 420?

Here: https://youtu.be/OurGZr5EGLY

Then another of my saved youtube pages yielded this classic. I can't decide whether I still favour Joan Baez' version, crackin' ballad no matter what:
