Phosphoric acid might be the key if you use a carbonated cola-type drink. Strangely enough, if you look at the various proprietary rust removers/killers they contain the very same stuff. You can buy it in a very fetching shade of blue from the chemists' if you ask nicely.

Wow! Blue juice  , I must get some of that. ;) Come to think of it, there used to be a brand of juice called "Blu" which was, erm, blue and tasted of some sort of fruit.
As juice goes, Coke isn't the best type for removing rust, that would be Levi Roots' own brand of Ginger Beer, which was all I had in the fridge when I wanted to deal with the surface rust on the daily car's exhaust manifold heat shield. I was most impressed by the effectiveness of the stuff - more impressed, in fact, than the sis-in-law beast was when she found yet another car part in the basin  - but AsDa's own brand no added sugar range of juice is also half decent, especially the cream soda variety which not only manages to taste like real cream soda in spite of its being - strangely enough - without added sugar, but also made short work of making the element in my classic Swan kettle shiny again, even when it hadn't been descaled since 1997.

See, I knew I hadn't just imagined that..

Mmm! The missus uses blue something or other in the washing machine. Whether it's for the washing or for combating lime scale, or even both, I'm not sure. Maybe I could get high on it if I took a swig.

So which is it then? Whitening the clothes or bluing things? I wonder whether it works with rum, as an alternative to Marmite?
