Popping across the pond

Got something to say, but it's not classic related? Here's the place to discuss. Also includes the once ever-so-popular word association thread... (although we've had to start from scratch with it - sorry!)

Popping across the pond

#1 Post by alabbasi » Sat Dec 19, 2015 5:21 am

I made a spur of the moment decision to jump on a plane and visit London for 4 days to see my parents. It will be the first trip back home in 12 years (TWELVE YEARS!!!).
I now have a wild bug to find a semi decent Land Rover Defender 110. Needs to be a 2.5 TDI with a manual gearbox and older then Jan 1991.

I think the loot is dead, where else to look?

Yep, those are the main 3 I'd try, and of course they're all on-line so you can start hunting now! - I also find occasional bargains on more low-key local advertising sites such as Friday-Ad.

Welcome back Al! Have a great time.

Welcome back, don't forget we drive on the correct size of the road here ;)

It is worth looking on the land rover owner forum
http://forum.lro.com/
and landyzone
https://www.landyzone.co.uk/forum/
they both have for sale sections although looking in the first couple of pages i can't see a 2.5td.

landyzone has a large number of for sale adverts, lro not so much but if you place a wanted ad you may get lucky.

There's a Land Rover indepenndent specialist in Maidenhead that might be able to help. Has a few for sale but not sure of type as I only saw it driving past. Has the advantage of being walking distance from station (Paddington FGW line) should you want to visit.

Sorry can't remember na ... Google ... And ...

There are a few, but not as many as I'd expect at this time of year, possibly because it's so warm just now. This is down South in Hampshire and hasn't had any fails for rot, test history is here and the only fail it's ever had is for its rear fog lamp not working. Advisories are all minor and the only mention of the word corrosion is to the battery tray, so not within any of the prescribed areas and not structural.

Gumtree also has this but it's about 200% over its value and has failed MOTs on suspension bushes which suggests that it may have been used more as its maker intended! It has advisories on chassis rust but these have either been addressed or weren't more than surface rust to begin with as they don't appear on later test sheets.

Then there's a whole boat load of overpriced tat that need such things as new quarter chassis for a test pass. There's also a promising 1994 example on there, would that be allowed to enter the USA if you put it away for another few years or is that not how it works?

Thank you all and thank you for the welcome. I'm pretty excited. Defenders don't exist in the US so it will be cool. Not worried too much about MOT, you can push a wheelbarrow full of parts to an inspection station over here and get a sticker.

Not the way i'd drive one, but it will get it in the country.
