clio diesel

Got something to say, but it's not classic related? Here's the place to discuss. Also includes the once ever-so-popular word association thread... (although we've had to start from scratch with it - sorry!)

Rich, are you sure it's bearings not noisy tyres? i had thought the rear bearings on my focus were tired but the noise is actually goodyear efficient grip tyres which are quite noisy. If I put my spares on (Dunlop SP Sport) they are really quiet.

My new Uniroyals had me on the verge of having a student take the Toyota's diff out and check the plates for signs of a Joe Dolce single, but would a tyre be noisy if the wheel was off the ground though? Rich, maybe your tyres are full with gravel or similar..

Apologies if I've assumed incorrectly that your stating that there wasn't any play would have meant lifting the car to check, maybe the car has a wheel bearing wear-o-meter on the dashboard? :P

I was assuming (possibly incorrectly) that assuming they are the fault the bearings were silent while the car was lifted as is often the case they only make noise while under load.

Good point, Terry. In that case yes, tyres could well be making some noise and certain brands are far more vocal than others.

Rich, when my Dad was stationed up in the North East during his national service, he ran an ancient (even at that time) Morris Eight and being an impoverished conscript he couldn't afford tubes or the air to fill them with, so he packed the tyres on the Morris with straw. He only used the car to drive along the coast during his time at that base, so no further than Elgin or Forres probably, but that straw served him well as he managed to avoid buying fresh tubes right up to the time when he was due to come out and needed to drive back down home. Maybe stuffing the Clio's tyres in a similar way would be quieter than running them with gravel inside!

An ex of mine had a clio like that. I've had to do several bulb replacements so I feel your pain.
I'm not sure I can hear anything other than engine noise in your clip. assuming you have checked for play in the wheel bearings, does your French fancy have a split drive shaft on one side? if so have you checked for play in the centre drive shaft bearing?
Diff bearings can make a very similar noise to wheel bearings.
Have you had your better half drive the car at a constant speed while you sit in the back and listen to see if the noise is louder on one side or the other?
