clio diesel

Got something to say, but it's not classic related? Here's the place to discuss. Also includes the once ever-so-popular word association thread... (although we've had to start from scratch with it - sorry!)

mechanic came yesterday, he checked the car over with his reader... the light was showing a fault with the glow plugs, got one out & its dead.. €25 a piece to replace them.. it can wait a while as galaxy needs new tyres.

You can probably get away with one out, two and it will become difficult to start. They are easy enough to check with an ohmmeter without having to remove them, a good one will be one ohm or less.

Is there a French version of Euro Car Parts or GSF? I am always shocked at the prices garages think they can charge for things when you have a look around and find them for half the price. I have never swapped the glow plugs on a Clio but on a TDDI mondeo they are an easy DIY job.

I sometimes use a site called http://www.mister-auto.co.uk they are a uk site, but things I've bought seem to have been shipped from France. Their cheapest plug is about £8, but a decent one (Beru) is £14.86, so they aren't a lot cheaper

Never having tried it with a clio I suspect you could swap the whole front subframe, engine, box, front suspension, etc as one unit. You will have to swap the ECU which assuming the wiring is identical no problem, otherwise an engine loom swap (not exactly difficult just another job). Possibly the clocks which may require the wiring behind the dash being swapped / adapted.
2 of you and a lift, probably doable in a weekend.
Don't forget to tell your insurance company and le dvla.
