Others have said much the same. My wife and I married in 1968, we bought our first television in 1998, and that was only because when my mother-in-law visited she wanted to watch daytime TV soap operas. We have yet to see things like Fawlty Towers, Morecambe & Wise and many other popular comic shows.

I've just watched both original series of Fawlty Towers as I hadn't been allowed to see them as a kid, simply because of the "funny" anagrams that appeared on the sign at whichever end of the episode it was. "Flowery Twats" was the one responsible for the bilateral parental decision to protect my young mind.

I sat through the whole 12 episodes, 6 from 1975, the remaining 6 from 1979, and can confirm that sometimes, things considered funny in the '70s just aren't funny now.

One of my 140s was a 142, much rarer in RHD UK spec than the 144 and 145, that one would sell simply because its doors appear not to be falling apart, but my 142S had uncharacteristically rotten door skins, meaning that I had no choice but to buy skins for a 242 and replace the handle rebates with the ones from the original skins. My last 144 was one of very few manual transmissions that I could possibly still manage now as these had very little pedal travel and - unless the cable was dried out - quite the lightest clutch action of any car I've ever owned.

Yes, that had me chuckling too. Far more so than most episodes of Fawlty Towers ever would. So it's official: GHT is funnier than a creaky old sitcom from the darkest days of the telly, even though John Cleese has a hand in it. They were dark too, my folks didn't buy a colour TV 'til 1979, meaning that every detail of that second series could be seen at its "best?"

"Flowery Twats," is a new one on me. but I do remember a headline on the news stand, most probably the oh so prissy Daily Wail, that was going on about "Farty Towels," it went right over my head, only weeks later did I pick up on the fact that the Fawlty Towers sign constantly changed. You live and learn.

Fawlty Towers was filmed in Wooburn Green (Grange Drive) - about 5 miles from where Iive. The building became a nightclub but had a serious fire ... think it's been converted to apartments now.

The episode with the Jeweller's Shop was filmed in Cookham High Street. Think that is now a florists.

So "what else would you expect to see out of a Torquay Hotel window" .. you'd need good eyes to see the sea (or a wildebeest!)

I must admit that i thought i was the only one who thought monty python was a bit over rated.. life of Brian is worth a watch though...
