Liking the FSO, shame it's not the Diesel, the later Caro was the cheapest way to find a working car with a Peugeot/Citroen 1.9 litre XUD engine, or they used to be.
Petrols, IIRC, had a fault in common with the Rolls-Royce V8  ; a fondness for bending pushrods between services. D641WTF, my 1500cc 125P saloon, did this, but it's ok because the supermarkets sell replacements and they're cheap: https://www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/p ... /267461616 .

(Don't take my word for it, take a look at the product reviews for that things... ;) )
I see that they contain nuts, that's not hard to believe.

On the 24th July 1950 (70 years ago yesterday), Lt. Col. Goldie Gardner set a new speed record in a Y-Type after his runs in EX-135.

“Goldie took over Dick Benn’s MG Y Type 1¼ Litre Saloon. This car, in otherwise standard trim, had been fitted with a small belt-driven Shorrock supercharger kit blowing at some 8 or 9 lbs., and it was hoped that 100 mph could be achieved. The figures of 104.725 mph for the mile and 104.680 for the kilometre were considered to provide a highly satisfactory conclusion to the Belgian venture”.

So for a time, the MG Y Type was the World's Fastest Saloon.

That would be handy, but alas no, not when it means constantly variable transmission, a term relating to a vehicle hoarder's ability to set out looking for a vehicle to play with, and considering many alternatives before, usually some months later, settling for something completely randomly selected because the original "mission" statement had been lost in a sea of wasted journeys to view overpriced scrapyard fodder many, many miles from home.

Would this come in handy for CVT? https://www.ebay.co.uk/i/163041151726?n ... gK5qvD_BwE

John, was it something like this that you made your attempt at the land speed record?

 Yes, but a five door hatch. Same colour, same (Astra L 1.3S) spec and the first  only car I ever drove at more than 130mph on a UK motorway. Oddly enough, I had a Relay Plus once while my Reliant kitten saloon (red, NGR414P, now yellow on the log book but the yellow one should be wearing the plate NAH994P), was unwell after it had a head on collision with a Transit coming the wrong way at me up a one way road. Nice lad driving it, we waited for the police to arrive and they came mob handed because they thought we'd be tearing lumps out of each other when in fact, we passed the time by playing I Spy  .. Oh yes, so the red kitten, which had passed its MOT the day before, was bought, along with my yellow one, by a conniving sheister who wanted a quick test for his own car, which had a rotten chassis, fine as I'd already had a handsome payout from the van hire company's insurance. The red car (mine) was crudely fixed with new wishbones, radiator, headlamps, all body panels up to the windscreen, a driver's door and two tyres then given the NAH plate. I've met dodgy sellers often enough, but never was there such a dodgy buyer...

Ah yes, that Relay Plus, I'd nearly forgotten that! It was a Nova 1.4SR, split new from the AA depot with a mere 12 miles on the clock. First of the 1.4s it was, with earlier Novas SR being 1.3, and naturally, being a tight fresh engine, I respected the AA's instructions not to "spank the 'nads off the poor wee thing." Hmm, turned out that being the lighter car, it felt ;) even livelier than the Astra, but of course I never drove from Edinburgh to Leeds, three caked mates in the passenger seats, at any more than the national speed limit. However, Leeds and Edinburgh were both caught up in some sort of temporal displacement that night, meaning that we drove down, had a jolly good night in a club, drove back and were all bright eyed and bushy tailed for our work that morning. Or rather, the pished and/or otherwise unfit ones were but I was driving and yet I had the fuzzy head afterwards. Natural justice, pah!
Odd thing is that the night Edinburgh and Leeds moved closer isn't documented anywhere in cyberspace, but we worked out that reaching one from the other in two hours and forty minutes each way could only have meant that they were no longer 220 miles apart?
