Is the aerial properly earthed? I presume by static you mean ignition interference. AM and long wave in particular is prone to interference and you can't be getting a very strong signal in France. Did the problem appear suddenly after any work you had done?

That's the first thing I'd be checking. There are of course other potential sources of interference but start with the free stuff and work dearer from there!

In the windscreen heating element perhaps, or the rear screen element? Beware the element in the room..

Oh, and there I was just about to mention the joys of Françoise Hardy's uniquely French 1960s Yeh Yeh tunes. Give her a listen and just ignore the fact that she's ancient these days.

I could be wrong, Rich, but I believe that the correct way to "work" an iPod is by heating the device in an oven at 230C for two hours.
