EP 90 EP 80/90 and GL4 and GL5
EP 90 EP 80/90 and GL4 and GL5
Gents.
EP90 is no longer being made by Comma! Halfords etc and all my local motor factors only sell EP80/90 (non Comma).
Does anyone have any experience of EP 80/90 in place of EP90 ? I cant believe my Jaguar Gearbox is the only one that needs EP 90.
I am well aware the Land Rover boys need EP90 GL4, but can i use GL5 in a Jaguar / other classic?
So EP 80/90 ? and GL4 or GL5 ?
(PS EP 80/90 comes in GL4 or GL5)
Can the Practical classics mag guys hep with this, its going to affect loads of readers!?

We use Morris Lubricants oils in the PC workshop, they do EP80, EP90 & EP140 gear oils as well as straight SAE30, 40 and classic 20/50.
See www.morrislubricants.co.uk
I hope this helps.

GL5 oil contains sulphur, which can attack yellow metal, so if GL4 is specified, GL5 cannot be used, although some oils claim to be compliant with both GL4 and GL5 specifications and so should be ok. Do not fall into the trap of thinking that GL4 is simply a lower specification version of GL5.

Cheers John. I don't see a EP90 ? I see a EP80/90 and a AG90 which is GL 1 specification but no EP90 GL3/4.
I think Morris may have also stopped EP90... On the web site anyway.

Triumph trunions need EP90 also! Just bought some Castrol EP90 from Ebay, there's several people selling it there.
Re: EP 90 EP 80/90 and GL4 and GL5
After some asking about it looks like EP80/90 is better for the job anyway.
Daz, do you need GL4 or 5 ?

Penrite seem to offer oils to suit older cars - http://www.penriteoil.co.uk/our-products.htm.

Re: EP 90 EP 80/90 and GL4 and GL5
If GL5 attacks yellow metals then it's not the thing to be squirting through those Triumph/Reliant/Lotus/etc. trunnions. I always used straight (no EP additive) 140 weight gear oil in the trunnions of various Rebels and a Scimitar (both cars use GT6/Vitesse ones), the handy thing about that was that it could also be used in the (very, very worn) headstock bearing on the old lathe in the hut, which would squirt anything thinner out of its cup and all over the ceiling whenever I had a thread to cut or similarly stressful task to see to.
