That's an XK engine, came in 3.8litre or 4.2 litre format, and was fitted in just about every Jaguar from the 50s up to the 80s, including the beautiful XK120/140/150 sports cars, the "Mark" Jaguars including the Mark 10 and the popular Mark II, and also E-types, it ended with the end of production of the XJ6 saloons.

It was, IMHO, one of the best engines ever made.

I'm no expert but that's roughly right. It'd take a serious expert to identify exactly which car that engine came from using only the information in the photos!

Luxo - You are right but also I am also no expert on these engines but it is of an early type - you can tell by the old series long tube air filter

What about 2.4, 2.8, 3.4 & 3.8? The one in the pic can't be 4.2 (or 2.8) because it has the wrong cam covers.
The dynamo dates it as early.

Unless it's simply sinking into the soft mud, that's a 2.4 from a Jaguar 2.4 litre, a.k.a MK1. Other capacities were noticeably taller externally and a late 2.4 from the "entry level" 240 - the one that shared the shape of the MK2 but not its lovely big bumpers or power - should have a Lucas AC11 or similar alternator attached to it.

 Hmm, maybe it is sinking? That airbox isn't a MK1 thing as they had an elongated oval shape but everything else says 2.4..

Thanks everyone. I'll have to investigate and see can it be rescued.
