Seat foam suppliers?

#1 Post by JPB » Mon Feb 27, 2017 10:40 am

Morning folks, I'm looking to replace the foam in the base cushion of the daily car's front seat. Maybe I'm a little too 'big boned' for my height  , maybe these things aren't supposed to last more than the 130,000KM that the car has now covered since new but whenever I'm on the passenger side of the seat, the foam feels much more bouncy and supportive than the driver's end does and this is causing a dilemma.
I could buy a chauffeur and ride around on the passenger side or, and this is the practical solution, I can replace the foam easily enough but does anyone know of a source of the stuff, preferably shaped to suit?

I could buy a new slab of foam from the Toyota dealership and that's still another (slightly expensive) option, but I don't want to open my wallet too wide as I'm afraid of straining the hinges.

And no, the base cushion can't be turned upside down and replaced the other way up because the top of the cushion is shaped and the positions of the seat belt stalks are offset as the middle one and passenger side one come up through the same slot, where the driver's one has a narrower slot. This isn't a VOR situation and is unlikely to become that for years yet, but my backside would be grateful for any information.

Thanks all,
J

If that does not work out John - look up a local car trimmers - if you take the old foam in to them they should be able to cut / form & supply you a new one to pattern - the guy I use at my end of the country does it while I wait (I always have to call him first though as much like me he is always up to his armpits in it)

Cheers Chris, another good suggestion as I'm only around 24 miles from a car interior specialists from whom I get free offcuts of Rexine, vinyl and similar materials for my radio restorations. They get their foam from a chap who used to have a warehouse full with the stuff, but the last time I met him, he was clearing his collection of Dafs along with the upholstery products. I didn't have the modern daily car at that time so wasn't too distressed when I witnessed the disposal of foam from a room the size of an aircraft hangar. Hindsight eh, it's a wonderful thing! :(

I could take the foam out of the seat to get a new piece carved to suit, but as the car is in daily use it's rarely standing still for long enough to take the seat out and remove the base cover. Then there'd be the problem of how to transport a 5'2" wide chunk of foam to an upholsterer when the only other vehicle I own that I can still drive, and which is currently road legal, has two wheels and its top box is only really suitable for sandwiches.
Ironically, the daily is large enough inside to host a small basketball tournament but I don't fancy travelling anywhere sitting on an upturned bucket.
:scared:
I can only think of one person who likes the bucket for a piece of furniture:

Thanks for the link, I ended up replacing all three of the foam parts of the front seat - one base cushion and both of its separate backrests - with genuine Toyota parts that I found in a yahoo.jp auction, these were a mere 10154.48 Yen (around £77 at the time of writing, possibly less in March/April 2017 when I did the job).
