The Workshop Project

Is exactly what it is - a project to sort out my workshop - it was built by the previous property owner also into classic ownership and although it looked ok on first appearance it very much like the house therefore I have branded the previous owner as a 'unfinisher / bodger' has everything is either unfinished, bodged or a combination of both

It looks great and is built pretty well with a matching slate roof with a 50 degree pitch to match the house (which is an old chapel)

The added bonus of a loft space but has you can see unfinished with a lack of floor boarding (now completed) and crammed to the rafters with everything that SWMBO wants to keep just in case of a nuclear fallout (99% of which is useless but she insists on keeping it)

Nice work, will it fit a 2 post lift?

Have you mounted a strip light on the roller-door? Clever .. although if tight for space it is in a prime position to be "taken-out" on something immovable parked/placed too close. Didn't think of looking at that idea on mine ... how does the wiring supply work? My "motor" is on the side frame so it is on a flexible-coiled cable to the wall mounted control box .. remote activated of course!
I would love to have low down lighting like that but that's my storage areas .. all around the walls .. also considered a pit until I found the builders drawings of ours and the garage is sitting on concrete piles (side of valley!) and steel reinforced concrete floor!

Not enough height for a lift and no plans for a pit either - I am a bit spoilt for choice has a very close friend has a 2 post lift in his workshop that I have access to at any time - along with his lathe / milling machine / blasting cabinet etc - I also have access to a heavy duty car rotisserie so I could always utilise that on the larger projects.
Workshop is currently in use for the business approx 60% of the work is undertaken here and the other 40% on a mobile basis - over the coming months I will assess as to if I want to expand the business into a industrial unit and start employing others or if I just keep the business as sole trading and in the confines of current workshop - downside being is that the classics are now living outside but I have hopefully just sourced the use of a agricultural building for vehicle storage.

I needed a compressor for the workshop - whilst there is a vast range of off the shelf kit available - nothing suited my requirements - I wanted to future proof my capital purchases - hence although 150 litre 14 cfm (cubic foot per minute) compressor would suit my needs now - it highly unlikely that it would be of sufficient capacity in 12 months time so after much research I found a company that would custom build to my requirements and the end result is this

270 litre - 23 cfm - however to power a pump of that size the motor requires a 3 phase supply and I only have a single phase supply - so the motor is powered via an invertor - I also had an acoustic canopy made for it which takes the 101dba down to a much more acceptable 68dba - close the garage door and you cannot hear it running outside of the building - I have great neighbours and would hate spoil the relationship by creating nuisance noise.
Has you can imagine custom build + future proofing comes at a cost - £3,500 cost !
- but I am of the opinion that I want to do it once and it's pointless investing for the short term when buying professional equipment - I had the compressor mounted on industrial casters so that it be moved in the workshop if required - I now have it plumbed in with feeds to 2 wall mounted self retracting 15 metre reels - supplied air initially via a 3 stage separator with coalescer to provide breathing air for the air fed mask.

So several months on and much done - filtered air extraction / intake system fitted, door frames made up and doors hung to understairs access & loft / external side door access - painted the workshop out but still need to paint the floor - have invested in in a long roll box for tools along with a tall cabinet for the bigger bits of kit - will take a pic next time the workshop is empty (but it rarely is) - still left to do is the big sort out of the stuff in the loft so that I can put a workbench up there and mount the vice's - need to also make room for my box pan sheet metal folder too - still need to line out with plasterboard & decorate under the stairs out along with fitting a WC & hand basin - so much to do so little time
