Taxing a car that's been off road

#1 Post by Minxy » Thu Jan 28, 2016 5:06 pm

So I have just purchased a car that has not been on the road for about ten years - before SORN was introduced. It is tax and MOT exempt. It is being delivered to me on Monday and I should have the log book this weekend from the gentleman who has owned it for nearly 40 years. So how does one go about getting it taxed and what, if any, problems can I expect?

SORN was introduced in 1998 which is a lot longer than 10 years ago, so if it's been taken off the road since then it should be on SORN now.
Currently over 35 years worth of fixing 35 boxes.
Hoping to reach 65 years worth of fixing 65 boxes.

Just ring them up to tax it, as it has been off the road it won't allow you to tax it online.

Ah didn't realise SORN had been about that long.....what if the current owner has not SORN it does that present a problem?- I'm guessing it does.

It isn't your problem as you are only responsible from the date it comes in to your possession. Personally i'd pop in to the post office with the new keeper supplement and say "i'd like to tax this please".
Understeer: when you hit the wall with the front of the car.
Oversteer: when you hit the wall with the back of the car.
Horsepower: how fast you hit the wall.
Torque: how far you take the wall with you.

I thought the SORN only had to be done once. If the car changes hands, the new keeper has to declare SORN.

Sorn was a yearly declaration until I think somewhere around Dec 2013 / Jan 2014, when it became a one off declaration. I remember having to Re Sorn a motorbike just as the rule changed, but that then fell under the new one off declaration.

Likewise, my 'bike is on SORN, after the first year I tried to renew it but wasn't able to, that's when I realised it was now permanent until next taxed.

Cheers!
