aluminium wheels and steel wheels.

#1 Post by History » Fri May 08, 2015 8:26 pm

Aluminium is often called alloy. Alloy means a mixture of 2 or more metals. Brass is an alloy so is steel.
Aluminium wheels look nice but are harder to clean and dirty aluminium wheels look awful.

Steel wheels and wheels trims are much easier to clean.
Steel wheels can be straightened. Rust and cracks can occur.

Aluminium wheels are considered to be lighter. Often Aluminium wheels are about the same mass as steel. The error is because magnesium alloy wheels are much lighter. Also a tyre is quite heavy whether fitted to steel or aluminium.

Unsprung weight also includes a proportion of the mass of the suspension arms ( usually 70%). When this and the hub and the brake is added, the weight saving if any from a aluminium wheel is quite small.

So I leave the choice of steel or aluminium for the eye of the owner who after reading this can make a better informed choice.
