Sugestion for PC vehicles/projects/saves!
I wish to make a suggestion for Practical Classics to
Buy/Save and repair as a project.
The below link is to an Ebay item which has just been listed

FSO FIAT 125P PICKUP
As this manufacturer has been mentioned before, I will quote the PC magazine a year or 2 ago.
"There are less then 17 of ALL models of FSO in the UK"
So will PC save a one they can use?

Um...... can I? .... possibly? suggest that the ubiquitous 'taxi' the Mercedes w202 C Class be considered as a future Practical Classic?. I know.. no one loves it, Mercedes (proper) classic owners shun it and everyone else just runs it into the ground but that, I believe, is the very reason why it should be preserved.
It's Mercedes answer to the Austin Allegro. No?

May the light at the end of your long dark tunnel not be a train travelling the other way.

NO it's not rare if there were less than 100 left on the road out of all those registered than yes!M Paul Lloyd wrote:Um...... can I? .... possibly? suggest that the ubiquitous 'taxi' the Mercedes w202 C Class be considered as a future Practical Classic?. I have fond memories of a pale blue one of those when I was a student. A particularly attractive young lady had borrowed it off her dad to move into student housing, and for that a mini just wasn't big enough.........Mitsuru wrote:I wish to make a suggestion for Practical Classics to

And yes I helped fix her mini
And she was particularly good at changing starter motors on Ford Escorts
And swearing in German!
Landrovers and Welding go together like Bread and Butter. And in the wet they are about as structurally sound
Biting. It's like kissing except there's a winner

I had an fso 126p with a kent engine in it, it went like stink up to the day some scroat stole it
Re: Sugestion for PC vehicles/projects/saves!
I doubt whether PC consider rarity as a factor of any importance when deciding what car to feature next, I think you'll find that the only consideration is whether it will sell magazines or not. And in my opinion, restoration of an FSO pickup would keep magazines on the shelves in their thousands......Mitsuru wrote:NO it's not rare if there were less than 100 left on the road out of all those registered than yes!
Call my cynical?
Some people are like Slinkies - they serve no useful purpose, but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them downstairs.
Re: Sugestion for PC vehicles/projects/saves!
No offence, Rick, but that reads more like snobbery than cynicism. Not that I'm biased on account of my only ever split-new car purchase having been a 125p of course.
Bubs, how on earth did you fit the 4 cylinder motor in a 126? It must have been hanging about a foot past the back bumper.....

No offence taken John, it's a personal opinion, that's all - and that personal opinion is that the less FSO pickups I see the better. Oh, and they're not rare, there's many hundreds of the sodding things in Poland, a place I go to quite often.
I wasn't intending to be snobbish, I just wanted to point out the reality of how decisions are made in magazines these days - it's got precious little to do with saving old cars from extinction and a lot to do with making money through selling magazines IMHO, that's all.

Lots of pre 70's cars have been done going back to pre war cars and such like.
I know there a re those who would prefer not to see 80's cars in the mag, but as time march's on they too have become collectable motors.
How about a car that was designed in the late 70's for an 80's launch?
A buyers guide has been done on Austin Rover's "M" Range of cars, so why not restore one?
They are now in the price guide, and Rimmers still have parts for them, as do Hadrians and a decent ammount of stock is held within the clubs that support them?
Rover is no longer with us, and it's unlikely it will ever return, so why not do a homage to it's 80's fleet, and include a few "Improvements" to show people just how user friendly they are, and how easy it is to live with one?
Mal.

Some of the cars that were featured in volume 1, number 1 of the magazine, way back in the mists of time, were newer then than any of the cars you suggest would be now. Now, I'd be the first to admit that anything built since about 1970 doesn't "feel" especially old to me. However, I remember, as a 16 year old, reading that first ever edition of our favourite monthly, old car-related publication and thinking that the 1958 A40, the '70s MGB and even the Scimitar that receives a brief mention were really old. Today's generation of young enthusiasts will presumably view '80s cars in the same way so, in order to maintain the interest in our hobby that exists among younger readers, I believe that features on late '70s and '80s cars, regardless of their make or model, will work well. I do understand that it's not possible to please everyone always, but Practical Classics would, IMHO, ascend to legendary status if it were to find, interview the owner of and report on the experience of driving and living with.....MG Mal wrote:....Rover is no longer with us, and it's unlikely it will ever return, so why not do a homage to it's 80's fleet, and include a few "Improvements" to show people just how user friendly they are, and how easy it is to live with one?

A Talbot Tagora.
OK, so we'd be more likely to find a concours FSO Caro 1.9D hatch than a Tagora, but sometimes it's good to enjoy something vicariously.
