Site Outage

#1 Post by TerryG » Wed Feb 22, 2012 8:19 pm

Our apologies for the recent outage to the Practically Classics forum.
This was caused by a user attempting to upload an infected file to the server. Our hosting provider turned the site off as a precaution.
No data was affected and the anti-virus system prevented anybody from downloading the infected file.

To prevent this happening again we have had to disable the uploader until we can modify it so it only accepts images.
Apologies for any inconvinience. Hopefully we will be able to turn it back on again very soon.

...which is exactly where most malicious code would surely be hidden. Photobucket being chief among sources of parasites of that nature. Their clickable thumbnails are currently on the proscribed lists at several of the sites I visit. ;)

Oh bums  I was putting up something yesterday which contained pee/bucket thumbnails & the site 'died' as I posted..... thought it was a coincidental site maintenance sort of thing..... but maybe I am guilty m'lud'

I have altered my post to contain full size pee/bucket images and that has worked as normal....

If it was me, please accept my apologies.

In this instance someone had attempted to upload a zip with a virus contained within.
I am sorting the code out to include a proper image uploader so the site checks headers before accepting a file. I am in the middle of an equipment refresh at work which is keeping me very busy so it is going to take a bit longer than normal (why couldn't our mistrey Ukranian pick a quiet week to try and break the forum!)

When did it return? The link I was using was invalid.I was thinking, oh no down again. So I was getting impatient ;) so I put in the facebook page in the address bar (even though I am not on FB), nothing about outage and just now there I googled PC to link me to the site.Only for that I would still be thinking that the site was still down  .

Any idea who is was? Hope it wasnt me, I like pics and vids :ugeek:

The forum was down for 2 days, back up about 5 minutes before i posted the notice. I will try and remember to post on FB information of any further outages (hopefully there won't be any)
It would have been back up sooner if it wasn't for work insisting that i actually do what my contract says when i am in the office (which is a bit unreasnoble if you ask me)
We will have an uploader again before too long, i have found the tools to do what I want, it is just a question of bolting them to the site (and fixing the email notices for subscribed topics which appear to have died).
It's all good fun.

You can sleep safely knowing that the PracticallyClassics police won't be knocking on your door. It was not you.
