The official PC forum and its demise - an apology.

#1 Post by admin » Wed Jan 05, 2011 11:57 am

As you're probably aware the old PC forum disappeared suddenly and without warning. As the Admin on the old forum, i'd like to apologise for not letting users know about the impending closedown. I had known for some time (about a month and a half) that the future of the forum was in doubt, but after negotiaton we had been assured that we would be able to migrate the forum, and its database / contents / users across to a new host, and run it voluntarily as a fan site such as this.

However before i was able to do this the site was permanently switched off without warning. This was both unexpected and unfortunate, and i apologise for being so naive - I should have anticipated a situation such as this and informed the old forum users to the situation immediately. All of the staff of the magazine found the old forum to be an extremely useful and powerful resource, and fought to transfer the forum. We hope that this independently run fan forum will go some way to replacing the old PC forum, and that some of you will decide to join us again and build an all new community for classic car fans and readers of Practical Classics Magazine.

"Welcome back online"
Thanks for the (facebook) message about the new forum.
apology accepted although my already low opinion of bauer is now even lower.
Fingers crossed the old crew find their way to the new forum.
I'm going to re-start the word association game now. It'll help get my post count back up into the thousands again ;)

Hi Neil! ;)
Some people are like Slinkies - they serve no useful purpose, but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them downstairs.

Thank you Neil.

I think the majority realised it had to be down to powers that be, rather than you guys, but it does bring into question just what Bauer Media think of their readership, and I am still of the opinion it's rather low.

I am still debating whether to still buy any titles published by them.

Well it's up to you what you do of course, but it's worth noting that this was a group wide policy and not just a PC thing (Classic Cars magazine also lost its forum for example). The thought behind it (as explained to us anyhow) was to invest the money spent hosting and running the website back into the magazine rather than spending it online, which makes sense in harsh economic times etc.

So we've set up this one instead, which has cost about £30 all in.

The staff at PC understand that this will have annoyed many of its readers and it is up to you whether you wish to continue buying the mag (as is your choice of course) but we're working really hard to get the magazine back to its core values, and the team hope that you will stick with the mag.
