Got the axle out late last night. I had everything loosened off except the front spring BOLTS (nuts were loose), so they put up a little bit of a fight but tapped out fine once I twisted them a bit.

I knew the lower rear shackle bushes were worn, but I wasn't prepared for how worn:

Clearly they have been like that for a considerable amount of time based on the state of the spring:

New bushes will do wonders for the ride quality!

I got it disassembled (everything cam off, even bolts that looked rusted to hell) and gave it a quick wire brushing but ran out of time. The front of the diff was covered in the same thick buildup of oil and dust/dirt that the engine and gearbox are and it resembles soft cake. It was a good inch thick in places, this is after I scraped the worst off:

You'll also observe the still almost intact axle identification tab in the upper right corner! Sadly the outer edge has corroded a bit and the ratio numbers are no longer readable but I am going to try and keep this in original condition and laquer it to preserve it. I spoke to the owners club historian and he said it is EXTREMELY rare to see those still on a car, as they usually just rust away.

Some latest progress pictures. Axle was mainly oily and grimy.

An initial jetwash had it looking much better

Took a couple more runs to get it clean, after which I removed the brake lines and handbrake linkage prior to painting:

Image

While that was drying I refitted the freshly painted bumper mounts and while the bumper itself is in good shape, the bolts were not so I fitted new ones.

Finished painting the axle so refitted all the brake components and replaced the diff oil while I was at it:

Then came the fun part! Coming from a dry climate the car is in mostly excellent shape underneath with only light surface rust with many areas still showing the original blue paint. Here is one of the forward spring hangars for example:

I'm doing the rear end this winter so decided to tackle everything that was accessible while the axle was out. After about 3 hours on and off of scraping, wire brushing and generally getting covered in crap, I got to this:

Now my garage needs a clean because despite my best efforts, everything is covered in rust dust.

Going to paint this week and hopefully get the axle in on the weekend, though we are scheduled a winter storm so we shall see.

I got the underside painted!

Had to borrow a tap and die set to clean up some threads for the U bolts and front spring bolts, and new lock nuts spun on nicely. I put the springs back on the axle this morning then took the wheels off and rolled it under with a jack to re-install it. I got the front bolts in but am waiting for a friend to come and help with the rear and to bleed the brakes. Then it can go back on its wheels...finally.

Everything is only loose at the moment so I can make final adjustments once the springs are bolted up. It's nice to have some garage space back too!

Axle is back in! All that's left to do is bleed the brakes, thought I'd add some before and after shots.

Not necessarily - remember that car wouldn't be tested here either, or at least it's not mandatory.

Sadly both you and luxobarge are right. Most cars out here at not too bad and would most likely pass a UK MOT. But there are some real sheds. Here are some rather tame examples of what you see driving around out here:
