Getting ready to put the Escort into the garage...been on the drive for 6 months after a piston ring broke up on no 4 cylinder
Engine out job as no way to remove sump in situ......145 thousand miles so cannot complain i suppose....no smoke at all before trouble will look at the bottom end but i would be surprised if the big ends or mains are bad as i always changed the oil and filter at 3,500 miles.....will check valves and replace the clutch of course..a nice Kent engine to work on..done a few of them in the past.....so many guys have knocked on my door asking if it was for sale......notices on windscreen is it for sale when in stores car park.....

Sorry to read about the fate of you MK2 Jim. I hope the piston hasn't caused further damage. Where you buying the rings from?

The piston is damaged and the broken ring has taken a small gauge in the cylinder wall at the top i am hoping that by staggering the piston rings the compression will be okay.....i will of course replace all the rings and check all pistons for damage ..the company that i contacted for new piston/rings i made a note of but at the moment cannot find it ....the engine has never been rebored ...so all standard pistons/rings.....it was no2 piston and not no4 my mistake.....having worked on these Kent engines i know they can take quite a bit of punishment....will check mains and big end bearings.....140 thousand miles is a lot but i have really looked after it oil/filter every 3500 miles......
