1999 Ford Puma 1.7

#1 Post by 3xpendable » Thu Aug 07, 2014 7:22 am

Just a quick note with some piccies taken this morning as I didn't get the car till 11pm last night and had to head to work first thing. Basically I was due to collect Wednesday but the owner noticed an issue which turned out to be the crank sensor and he wasn't happy giving it to me until everything was right so he brought it to me then I had to run him home so a late night! He even put half a tank of petrol in it for me. Just 40,000 miles from new with full service hist, recent Pirelli tyres etc. 11mth MOT, 5 mths tax, not bad for £800!

Drove very nicely, a few rattle noises but no more than you'd expect. I took it easy as I'm changing the timing belt this weekend but as I dealt with his wife before I'd never met him in person and he told me on the drive home he's had it for many years and its been stored in a big garage as part of his private collection! More after the weekend but here's some pics.

Impressive stuff for someone who died in 1980! The car itself looks pretty good to me, just watch out for ethereal manifestations when you drive it. Mexico to England is no distance for a ghost to travel.

Took the car back to west Wales on the weekend to do the timing belt. Got it done but it was a pig of a job! Took over 5 hours for two of us, though some of this was to fabricate a crank locking tool. I'm glad I did it though as it was the original belt but its annoying when for example you have to remove the cam cover, but to do that you need to loosen the engine lifting eye and to do that you need to remove the alternator!! Oh you have to remove the coil pack to remove the other lifting eye too, I hate moderns! Dad kept saying "see on a Capri this would have been done in an hour"

Once that was done I was able to drive it a bit harder and its fun I must admit, it's nippy and handles well so on the weekend I'm going to give it a good clean.

You managed to get the crank bolt out then they are usually pretty tight, did you use a new one when re-fitting (The are torqued to yeild if I remember correctly 40Nm + 90 deg) doing these up correctly is critical as the cam belt puley is not keyed to the crank and relies purely on the friction from the pulley bolt to hold it in place.

You remember well :)

Yep all done to the letter and I got a Gates kit that supplies a new bolt with it along with a tensioner.

More pics on the weekend.
