My 1968 Rover P6 S1 Three Thousand Five! A Refreshtoration!!

#1 Post by Pilkie » Sun Apr 06, 2014 3:08 pm

It had to happen not long after buying the white S1V8!
How could I say no to this Arden green gem!!!
An early 1968 S1V8,43k miles and a 2 owner.
Chassis no; 42501465A
Engine no; 42501497A
1st reg'd 1/8/68,not sure of the build date yet?
The 1st owner had it held back to get the new G reg!?
1st owner from 1968-74 did 20k miles!
Last from 1974 till 2014 did 23k miles and it was dry stored from 1995 till 2014.
Just 43k miles genuine, never ever been welded!! :D
A super solid base unit,a near mint interior, really sweet and strong engine and box!
Dry stored since 1995.
Recommissioned and new MOT.
Initial inspection done by Stina,"Cheers mate :) "
I went to see it today, did a full poke about checkover,in,out,up and under!
Test driven, the price negotiated and the deal done!
Collection next week, hopefully along with a nice cache of spares, from the previous owner!
Just haggling a price for all of the NOS spares!!
Only obvious faults,it needs 4 wings and a total repaint,as most other panels have very minor scabs/scars,but no dents!!
And part of the cache of spares includes 4 NOS wings!
And a set of 4 still boxed side/ind light units!:)
More next week once its home and I can have a play! :D
Hopefully in about 2hrs,the white one will be sold!

Its now home and performed well on its 1st long drive back from Poole to Bristol, for 20 odd years!
Sweet as engine and box, handles nice and tight,no slop in the steering or suspension!
The interior is near mint, only needing a hoover and light clean up!
Have now got it up on the ramp, and took the cover sills off,and apart from a bit of original underseal peeling and a light surface dust rust, and the dumdum seal between sill and floorpan old and crumbly, there is no rust anywhere on the underside! :D
Never have I seen a car so solid as the day it left the factory 46yrs ago!
The wings are shot, and there are scabs all over the body panels, bumpers and lights chrome shot, but as I also got a NOS set of wings,NOS set of lights, and I have a nos set of bumpers,a full body refurb is all it really needs, and wont take long, once ive saved up some more pennies!
Piccys :D

1 week or so later and ive had time to properly check over my new project! :)
Ive removed all 4 wings and both outer cover sills to reveal that the base unit has never seen a welder since the day it was built, and it is SO solid that it wont need to see one for years to come! :D
All the sill fitting screws, wing fixing nuts and bolts came undone as if fitted last week showing no signs of rust on them, except for one that needed a hacksaw!
Some small patches of very minor powdery surface rust where the old underseal has lifted on the inner arches that are easily treated and sorted!
I got some more info on its history this week!
The previous owner locked it away in 1977 with 41000 on the clock, then in Jan 1995 got it out, fitted new tyres,1 rear caliper and exhaust and it passed an MOT,and used it on and off till the tax ran out.
He taxed it for 6 months and did approx 3000 miles before locking it away again in mid 1995 till 2014!
MOT history is;
1/8/1968-1/8/1971 No MOT required for 1st 3 yrs!
Approx 3500m per year!
1st Aug 1971 = 10775m
2nd Aug 1972 = 14136m
3rd July 1973 = 20592m
The 2nd owner bought it in Sept 1974.
4th Sept 1974 = 25971m
5th Sept 1975 = 31875m
6th Sept 1976 = 38104m
Garaged early 1977 till 1995,for 18yrs!
7th Jan 1995,41000m,MOT not found,taxed for 6 months.
Garaged June 1995 till Feb 2014,for 19yrs.
8th Mar 2014 = 42977m
Hope I can find a caring local firm to repaint him in his original Arden green in solid 2pack for a fair price.
All 18 panels will be stripped off the car, chrome, lights etc removed, and then painted & polished off the car except for the roof and inner door shuts!
Old rusty wings/sills off first, then new wings and sills will be trial fitted before all panels are removed.
New panels will have plenty of overpaintable underseal, and stonechip put on the insides before painting!

Bit of a balls up on the paint front! :(
Painter didnt give factor the details till friday, then found out what I said about it being hard to match was true, and right before the b/hol!
I then went on the search tues morn, and found a factor that produced a perfect match sample chip! :D
Their advert says we can match any colour!
They gave me the details to pass onto my painter,he ordered it and started to paint the doors and 1/4 panels only to discover its way too green!
One good thing ive seen though, the quality of his finish is excellent!
So its gone back to the factor for them to get it right, with a V good paint sample still on the original rear valence for them to match!
With all the info I have on the Arden green colour, all the various codes, formulas, alternative very close matches etc, you would think it easy to get 5ltrs  !
Whats needed is a good old school factor who understands old paint!
They all seem incapable of realising that black has to be added to get it to a VERY dark green!
The original formula says that 47% of the mix is black!
Maybe they should start with black and tint it green! :)
Its a black green rather than a green GREEN
Only 2 wks to the show I want to attend,so things are getting a bit last minute to get it done in time!! :?
If ALL 19 panels can be done by the end of next week, and they will be refitted as they come back, then that gives me a week to get it finished!
