A 1969 Series 1 Rover P6 V8 joins the fleet.

#1 Post by Pilkie » Sun Feb 23, 2014 10:56 am

Well its been over a month since I sold my 2 project cars, and started on 6 months of chemo.
But I am getting bored and going stir crazy doing nothing!! :x
So,I've been on the look out for an inexpensive, hopefully road legal project car that
I can tinker with when I feel like it,as some days I am knackered, others I am fine.
It will be good medicinal therapy for me,as I wont be returning to work till 2015!
It has to be a pre 1974 british car and have a good spares supply network.
Will just have to see if anything turns up locally!
 YAY!!!
My luck was in!
Found very locally, very solid well looked after, structurally and mechanically sound,
with only minor cosmetic issues,T&T and on the road, well priced! :)
Ideal to tinker with and improve on,as I know about them and have lots of spares.
A 1969 Series 1 Rover P6 V8,with a stack of history going back to its 1st resto in 1975!
Before you say it,yes it has S2 wings and doors from a resto done in 1992,but it is a proper S1!!
Lots of piccys to drool over here! 8-)

Didn't think you would be able to put with watching daytime telly for long, my dad had the same illness 16 years ago, his boat never looked so good and having something to focus on did him the world of good, he is still at it now, just taken on another boat and he is now 76 years old.

Good luck with it and the recovery.

Thanks Kevin! :)
My plan is to restore it to a very rare spec you had to pick off the options list!
April yellow paint, with red leather interior and a full set of headrests, passengers grab handle, black webasto sunroof, chrome rostyle wheels, chrome cibie spot/fog lamps and rover logo'd car mats and mudflaps.
Possibly a continental boot mount!
Fully repaint the engine bay in proper satin black and fully detail the engine and other bits to original scheme.
Clean and paint all suspension and brake components.
While all the body panels are off the car for paint,I will go over the base unit and eliminate any rust I find, then smooth black stonechip the whole thing,+ fit new rubber seals where needed.
Find and fit the best exterior chrome bits I can.
Ive already got fr and rr nos bumpers in stock!
Refurbish the red seats and fit new carpets and furflex + whatever other trim needs doing.
I hope to have it ready for next years show season, but all depends on my finances and my health,so no real rush!
It will be done when its done!
Hopefully it will end up looking something like this!

Wot - LHD?

Glad to hear the chemo is progressing and that you have something to occupy the mind when you can't do full-blown restos. I must admit, I hated the few days after chemo, when I couldn't do anything apart from watch daytime TV! I don't think the doctors were too pleased with me doing heavy stuff on the Rapier (fastback) that my Father bought to keep me occupied!

I like the car - it should be a beaut when you've finished it. I have to confess that I was almost tempted to swap the Golf for a 2200 earlier in the month - it would go well with the Landy and tractors. However, as I have heavy work on the Landy and one of the tractors (and the digger), I certainly don't want another project - and fear most of the eBay "restored and ready to use" cars will be as "well" sorted as the Landy!

One of the long list of Classics I'd like to have a go in.

Doesn't look like a fixer or a resto, I'd call it a daily Driver.
Landrovers and Welding go together like Bread and Butter. And in the wet they are about as structurally sound

Biting. It's like kissing except there's a winner

Pilkie

Good luck with the Chemo, it looks like you have got a good car there to make the improvements to

Looking forward to seeing the progress

Pilkie,

I'm only down in Westbury, so if you need a hand lifting etc, give me a shout and I'll sort out popping over.

Mal.

Thanks all! :)
It could easily be pressed into daily use,and I do intend using it!
I have been since last thurs as my other P6 is having a few paint touch ups done.
It wont be a major resto as its structurally and mechanically sound!
It will be a good cosmetic makeover, mainy a repaint in whatever colour I eventually choose as April yellow is now not No1 on the list!
Will search out better s/h and NOS bits of trim and panels to improve as I go.
Will work at it a corner section at a time checking over, fixing, cleaning, painting suspension, inner wings, wiring.
I have restored the 1st part, and its stored for when ready!
Fortunately I had 2 spares,as it didnt have one on the car!
