Re: 1952 Jowett Javelin
The Javelin has busy time ahead in the next month and shall be pressed into service with the Goodwood Revival Transport Corp - transporting VIPs, Guests & fellow GRRC members around the circuit during Revival weekend, (along with about 15 fellow Jowett Car Club cars & members). So time to ensure that any minor odds are sorted
The ignition switch had been playing up and a spare was located among fellow member Keith's 40 year stash of Jowett spares - no key with it but Keith managed to find two matching keys the following week at a local rally Simple access - a couple of screws later Slight rats nest and very elderly wiring (new wiring loom on the books over winter - but might wait and do it at the NEC restoration show in March)1937 Jowett 8 - Project - in less pieces than the Jupiter

Re: 1952 Jowett Javelin
Job one sorted next was the minor petrol weeps on the carb feed pipes - there are several unions & joints all bodged during previous ownership - bits of plastic plumbing washers etc
Some of the banjo unions required refacing to ensure a sound seal Several copper washers later and we had the petrol system issues resolved.1937 Jowett 8 - Project - in less pieces than the Jupiter

Re: 1952 Jowett Javelin
The engine has now done about 750 miles since its rebuild (rebuilt immediately prior to my purchase of the car) so time for a oil & filter change
Filter housing sits centrally over the top of the crankcase but there is a valve that allows the filter to be drained into the sump prior to removal -still quite messy though On the plus side - never have I owned a car (in over 40 modern & classic) with such easy access to the dipstick and oil filler Last job was a quick wash and leather in advance of a Sunday outing (De Havilland Tiger Moths at Woburn - reported on a separate thread)1937 Jowett 8 - Project - in less pieces than the Jupiter

Re: 1952 Jowett Javelin
So after its 450 miles of service during Goodwood Revival just a couple of jobs to catch up with: The nearside rear door catch had started to slip - a little adjustment and the screws tightened was all that was needed, the horn had a loose wire on the column connector that would sometimes lead to a intermittent fault - again a quick tighten up and it was back in order. Largest job was greasing up there are about 40+ points on the car - to access all the front nipples requires the wheels off the car but I would rather go to this trouble than have worn / seized ball joints / king pins etc - the factory service manual advises greasing all points every 2,500 miles with exception of the steering which require re-greasing every 500 miles. I found a very minor weep on the nearside front flexible brake hose to the wheel cylinder - just quarter of a turn is all it took but really glad that I found it at this stage. Checked everything else for wear & play - nothing really serious found but I can see that the bushes on the rear axle are looking beyond their best so I will start gathering the parts and drop the axle over winter. This just left a quick check of the levels and a wash & leather ready for next Sunday when the car takes part in a local fund raising rally for a cancer charity - its invitation only and our final destination is 'Highclere Castle' home the Earl & Countess of Carnarvon - better known to most people as 'Downton Abbey'

Re: 1952 Jowett Javelin
Time to prep the Jav for coming rally season - its got quite a few trips already planned - I noticed that one of the carbs was flooding along with when I gave them a quick check over one of the throttle spindles had a large amount of play in it
Easy access though with the grille off They are now with one of my fellow Jowett Car Club members - Keith - who just so happens was in Carb rebuild mode and was rebuilding several other pairs - the body on one will have to have sleeves inserted for the new spindle but we have a milling machine so its quite readily undertaken in house With Keith taking care of the carbs it frees me up to crack on with other things (New kitchen at home + day job + the early Javelin restoration) - the rad has a minor weep so I have an exchange rebuilt one supplied by the club parts department to fit. I can then just give the car a quick service & check over + clean up ready for it's first major run of the year which is to the Netherlands in April for a club event over there.1937 Jowett 8 - Project - in less pieces than the Jupiter

Re: Classic Fleet Addition (Addiction) ??
You certainly get some shady types at the Revival:Grumpy Northener wrote:Revival is a time warp event - nothing post 1966 gets into the circuit - so they encourage everyone to turn up in period dress - so here for your laughter is me & the other half in our garb for the event
I didn't realise that you were Hampshire based, you must bring that fabulous car of your's along to Hillier Gardens, Romsey, on Sunday March 1st. It's The Winchester MG owner's club event, but there is always a good turn out of other marques. It's from 10:00am to 4:00pm and will set you back £9. That's inclusive of any amount of passengers.
Are you back at Goodwood again in September?

Re: 1952 Jowett Javelin
I will have to give the MG meeting in March a miss - weekends are fully booked to the rafters at present - I am trying to keep momentum with the Early Jowett Javelin restoration project (seperate thread) so that it's ready for the Practical Classics Restoration Show at the end of March - I am also the manager for the club stand at the show so I have that to organise, meanwhile I need to get a day or so in on my Rover V8 and get it tested so that I can use it for transport for the Goodwood 73rd meeting the weekend before the restoration show. Meanwhile the good lady would like me to advance major works on the kitchen & utility so that when the new kitchen arrives at the end of May it can be fitted without delay. Revival is already booked - said good lady is already planning the outfits and the Jowett Car Club have 20 cars attending that will help make up a good number of the Revival taxi fleet

Re: 1952 Jowett Javelin
So with the Rover completed - I found time to sort the Javelin too - Carbs back on but a lot of work in getting them balanced and the tick over correct - still not quite 100% but very close - it's probably still running on last years petrol which will be several months old so once I get the other bits done and will go and fill the tank with fresh fuel.
Old radiator had a couple of weeps on it plus a large majority of the cooling fins looked like they been to war so I had the club spares department exchange it for a rebuilt one - I also removed the Heath Robinson electric fan that a previous owner had fitted at some stage - the car really doesn't need it New radiator in - I took the liberty of fitting new hoses - one each side to the heads at the bottom and one at the top from the water pump.1937 Jowett 8 - Project - in less pieces than the Jupiter

Re: 1952 Jowett Javelin
Next was the ignition - apart from age there was nothing wrong with what was on the car but with the club spares doing a special offer
I replaced the points, condenser, rotor arm, distributer cap, plugs and leads - retaining the old arm, cap & condenser for breakdown spares With everything fitted I took the car on a road test - and filled up with fuel - although it ran ok I could feel it wasn't quite there at peak revs and the car stalled a couple of times when pulling up quickly on the country lanes.1937 Jowett 8 - Project - in less pieces than the Jupiter
