Daimler V8 250 Barn Find
Not really a barn find as it was never lost and it’s not in a barn.....
This Daimler has been parked for the best part of 30+ years. Most of its life has been in my Dad’s garage with a short stay of a few years in my Nanna’s garage and a garage up the road from my parent’s house.
I have a few memories of this car. I remember being asleep with my little brother side by side on the back seat when Dad got stopped for speeding in it. I thought we were at a toll gate as it was dark etc. He got let off! I also remember going up to my Nanna’s house to help Dad fit a new exhaust so he could bring it home (I wasn’t keen to go at the time because I had just got myself a new girlfriend who was 2 years ahead of me at school!). Driving it up the road to the neighbour’s garage was an experience too. I decided to use the kick down and then sailed straight past the house as the brake pedal sank to the floor. I also remember my Dad filling the tank with petrol when it broke the 50p a gallon mark, only to find the fuel tank leaked and so he lost it all over the garage floor. He took the tank out and fibre glassed it up so I know there is some work to be done there.
My Dad passed away a few years ago. Nothing has been done with the car in all those years. My Mum is now keen to free the space in her Garage for her modern mini. I have too many cars and motorbike projects around me already at my place and the wife won’t let me bring it home. My little brother and I are hatching a plan to resolve the problem.
We plan to take a week off work, get the car somewhere convenient to work on and get it MOT’d and on the road. The plan is to leave the interior and what we can of the bodywork as found for now so just concentrate on what’s required to get it running reliably and safely. We have friends who are willing to help and the carrot will be to share the car amongst friends that help us out. Anyone who helps get it on the road will be able to use it. If we decide to sell it at some point the profit (if any) will be shared amongst everyone.
So we need to find somewhere local to us in Derby that has a lift that we can use for a week. My brother and I will buy all the parts we think we will need up front so that we can get stuck in. We think we should be able to get it on the road for less than £2500.
So yesterday we dragged the Daimler out the garage and my mate Rob who is an MOT tester had a look over it for us. He thinks it’s surprisingly solid and so doable and is keen. So we stripped the fuel pump and carbs off to allow us to rebuild them.
Some pictures of what we found:
So what we found. It needs new rear jacking points and rear quarters on the sills. Brakes overhaul (including vacuum tank), fuel system overhaul (including fuel tank) and tyres. Some bits of the bodywork will need to be tidied.
All I need now is access to a lift and we can get cracking.

Fantastic car, great approach to its preservation. I wish that I were closer as I could fix you up with workspace, a four poster with wheelfrees, an English wheel - in case you need to make any panels - and some extra labour.
As it is, I wish you the very best of luck with your plans for the car and on the strength of the photos, it really doesn't appear too far gone, not by a long way. Here's hoping that the rest of the shell doesn't hide too much in the way of rusty bits. Even if it turns out to be a bigger operation than first thought, it has to be worth the effort for so many reasons that don't need me to list them all!
Great stuff.

Great to hear that this car will get another lease of life, hope you don't encounter too many problems and soon get him back on the road. Looking forward to following the progress!

Good luck with this project - although I live in Derby (Mickleover), the limit of my ability is in making the tea
Sorry I have no mechanical knowledge or experience and can't think of anyone who could help - but I hope you get the support you need and I look forward to seeing photos of how this develops

Got most of the skills I need to do it (just don't have time generally), and plenty of friends with specialist skills that will help so it should be a good fun. We have been toying with the idea of using a CJ Autos body roller instead of a ramp/2 post lift. At £950 they are a bit steep but would come in useful for other projects. I always fancied making a roller for myself using a drum brake and handbrake for the rotation and locking mechanism.

You sound like the kind of man I want to live near to! I am sure we could have some interesting conversations over a beer.JPB wrote:Fantastic car, great approach to its preservation. Re: Daimler V8 250 Barn Find
We have been thinking that maybe a body roller would be more appropriate for what we want to do. I can find a choice of 2:
The one supplied by CJ Autos looks like its the tool to have, but serious money:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/230718482426? ... 958wt_1182
And this one looks sensible money but I worry if its going to man enough to roll the car with engine and everything installed:

Anybody any experience with the latter?

Hi Rob
A guy in the local Derbyshire Mini Owners Club has one of those Ebay ones and has posted some info here about it
http://www.dcmoc.co.uk/forum/viewtopic. ... hilit=spit
Same guy has a 25 page project topic running where you can see it in use - I think he was working on a bare shell in a small garage and had some clearance issues with the roof! Apart from that he's been very pleased with it and I think another DCMOC member bought the same one as well
http://www.dcmoc.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=37&t=255
Like you say - don't know how it would cope with the extra weight of engine etc and in their write up they say they haven't tried it

Thinking I might go for the CJ Auto's one. I will also be able to use it on my Ascona 400 snd then either rent it out or sell it on. Will go to the NEC middle of Nov and have a look.
The other option is to drop the front subframe, engine and box out but that doesn't fit with the do it in a week plan.
I have ordered the carb and fuel pump kits so they should be here next week
Rob.
