Porsche 944

#1 Post by Jonjeffryes » Mon Mar 07, 2011 10:24 am

It's not been the best week in my classic world. For the first time since I bought her, the 944 broke down and left me stranded 150 miles from home in the pitch black and pouring rain....and in the middle of the Thetford Forest....as breakdowns go, it doesn't get much better than that.

A lack of charging caused the problem and after the usual basic checks under the bonnet and fusebox, it was a call to Carole Nash Insurance to get me recovered. Four hours later and a swift change from one truck to another just before the M25 saw me safely back home and the Porsche back in the garage.

The following morning, a quick review under the bonnet showed that everything was connected and the alternator belt was intact...just no charge. I tried the quick fix of replacing the regulator and brushes pack on the alternator, plus checked all fuses and cleaned all connections and earths....unfortunately without success.

Finally I removed the alternator and stripped it...it's a mess and I'm surprised it had worked for so long in the condition it's in....just waiting for the replacement to arrive to get me mobile again......I did think about writing to Porsche and complaining about the poor quality....after all it's only 27 years old!

Ah the joys of Ebay - proper Ebay that is, with a fellow enthusiast selling parts rather than yet another business.

A 80 mile round trip today saw me collecting the replacement 90amp alternator...and the vendor also threw in an updated 115amp alternator for free....what a gentleman.

Back home by 7pm and straight in to the garage....it only took half an hour to swap the 90amp unit over ...you can do it from the top of the engine after removing the air intake and maf.

Replacement alternator cleaned up and installed, charging is restored and the Porsche is back on the road....ready for a trip to London and then Norfolk and back over the next few days.

I think I may have grounds for a complaint...it's only covered 68000 miles :D

I love the S2....I've often thought about selling and trading 'up', but then I would lose the simplicity and dynamics of the totally manual car (no power steering, seats, aircon or anything in fact)...I feel it's purity is better than my previous 911's...and that's bound to upset some of the Porsche purists....

But for an everyday drive, the S2 is the best of the best...probaly better suited to my likes after five 928's as well :)

.....but I just cannot bring myself to sell the 'duchess'....so I guess the coupe and the MR2 would have to go to make me a two car 944 owner...now there's a thought :D

Over here all 944s were sold with air con, but don't kid yourself, hardly any of them have the ability to blow cold air out of the dash when it's warm out :D

None of my 928's were ever really cold blowers..despite spending £££' s with various specialists...
