My 1969 Landrover

My 1969 Landrover

Well this is mine, In chronological order...
If you dont know yet, its a 109" IIA 1-Ton, chassis number 13, and the oldest known one ton. I rescued it from a farm in early 2005 .It began its life with Southern Electricity Board in Portsmouth in early summer 1969 and I am restoring it to its "in service" condition and specification, as far as possible.

The vehicle is fitted with the in-line six cylinder Rover petrol engine, driving a lower geared gearbox shared with the IIB Forward Control Landrover. Axles are by ENV, and are much stronger than the Rover axles, or even the later Salisbury ones. The winch is hydraulic and driven via a PTO on the back of the gearbox. Tyres are 900x16 (very hard to find now) on extra offset 6.5" wide steel rims.

Is that Southern Electricity logo 'in period' ? Looks like a fairly recent one to me.
Have you forgotten that once we were brought here we were robbed of our names,robbed of our language,we lost our religion,our culture,our God? And many of us by the way we act,we even lost our minds.

Yes, that signwriting was introduced in 1966 and not superseded until 1989!

We also have this one, also ex-southern electric. It was a managers vehicle built in 1966. Unusually for a van it had a fully trimmed cab, as some of it can still be seen inside. Chassis extremities are poor, but the main rails are sounds, bulkhead needs footwells and door pillars. The body is not too bad and thankfully its all there. We do need a new hardtop panel though as the vents and alpine lights are PO additions.

The build colour was 'Beldene Green", the colour SEB used until 1966, and you can still see it inside.

The outside was resprayed in pale green pretty early in the vehicles life, and looks to have been a very professional job.

The correct winch was sourced and fitted.

Correct van sides fitted. These need to be cut along the bottom for the roof rack as per the originals we sold on.

The vehicle was clearly built with a split back door, but a series III full height door was fitted at some point during its working life. We know this as it is in pale green overall, so newer than the rest of the vehicle (also the spare wheel holder is a series 3 type) but the PO had it sprayed in bronze green when he bought it from Dunsfold, who had bought it off the SEB. It will go back to being an overall green pale green hardtop just like my 109".

It will look similar to this vehicle found in an old magazine, but ours will have the signwriting and roof rack. This one is a little later and has indicator side repeaters.

It looks like such a modern logo!
I used to work for SEEBoard,and even in the late eighties/early nineties we had HA Viva vans with a very 'old fashioned' looking logo on the sides.

Oh right. Yes it was done as part of a drive to modernise the firm. I actually think it looks very plain and old-fashioned compared to new ones. What did SEEBoard have as their logo?

SSE use Defenders round here; modified with bulgy bonnets; winches and shizzle :)
