Cheers mate! My concern was that there is a thread underneath that ring, if I cut directly across the ring and it cut across the thread will the new one still thread on?

Got a bit fed up with the 75 bearing issues so tackled something on the 164.

The leather is in good nick as in not cuts or burns but a bit cracked and grey.

So got some colouring leather balm.

Out comes the seats -

Hoovered and shamoo'd interior carpet and cleaned all the plastics etc.

Rear seats cleaned and back in ...

Hi All!

So here's the latest on the 75 rear bearing.

I welded the hell out of the retaining ring tool and tried again , and the ring failed to move a mm even with a scaffolding pole as lever.

So I decided to go with my first thought and cut directly across the ring with my Dremmel.

Then using a chisel I levered the cut end up and as soon as it raised above the rest the ring popped right out!

After lashings of WD40 I set to removing the bush with the one of the tools I bought.

And out it popped! So that tool was worth the cash!

I took some 800 grit and the WD40 and the 1200 and cleaned it right up to ensure it was going to go as smoothly as possible.

The plan I hatched was to head the housing and freeze the bearing, a plan that worked well with bushes on the past.
I wanted to ensure that I had no issue getting it in straight and save myself a ton of hassle.
And after an hour in the freezer, and 20 mins with a little bottle blow torch it slid right in!

I was feeling very pleased with myself, the locking ring went right in no problems.
Slid the drive in from the rear.

And then grabbed the wheel hub. Now the instructions show you slide it on the spline and eveything is ok. It shows no use of any tools.
Well it slid on the spline but stopped at going through the bush, so being the ape I am and still believing it was supposed to slide right through, I gave it a tap with the hammer and -

So the bearing broke up.

I am assuming then , and need confirmation that I needed to have pressed the shaft back in with the tool I used to pull the hub off. Or freeze the shaft like did the bush to allow it to slide though.

So advice please! I'm off to buy another bush bit of a waste of £50!

Done!

Got a new bearing. Heated housing and used the tool to press it back in.

Now this time I placed the wheel hub in the bush by a few mm and then used the same tool to press it home. The threaded bar in long enough to go right through the middle and press it in the same way you do the bush.

Lock nut on, drive shaft bolt back and its all on its wheels!

Only issue.............it wasnt the bush, the wheel is bent, there is still movement and I remembered after the mechanic saying the rear wheel was buckled! :lol:

Still it was 100k miles odd old and it was a good thing to learn! And the noise is gone based on the short drive I did so it needed doing.

Anyone got a single pepperpot?

Bunged her the 164 in for a MOT today, failed on back box, one brake pipe and windscreen wipers, result!

Ordered the bits.

Next up will be respray either myself or send it off.

Only thing I have noticed is a image of an injector is staying lit on the dash, does not seem to effect the driving just wondered what it was trying to tell me?
