Re: W108 Mercedes 280SE diesel conversion project
I have a bit of work to do to get you all up to date with the current status. This post will be another "I didn't do any of this myself" one! My friend very kindly undertook to make me an exhaust pipe. The original engine was a V8, so there was a pipe down each side of the car that came together and...

Re: W108 Mercedes 280SE diesel conversion project
Sorry for the silence since February folks. I never seem to get it together enough to have both time to post and available photos! Work continues. I'm currently swapping out the entire rear end in pursuit of a more favourable rear axle ratio. Multi-link independent rear suspension will be a happy si...

Re: 1953 Kaiser Deluxe
If it is as it looks surface rust laquering over a dry surface keeps the water out, this slows the rusting down. Ah! I've seen them doing it on those shows on TV and always wondered how laquer was going to do something paint can't! I guess that unless you have a de-humidified atmosphere to apply th...

Lovely car!kstrutt1 wrote:Fantastic looking car, you might want to laquer over the rusty patches to prevent them getting worse though.
How can laquering over rust stop it getting worse? Painting over it certainly doesn't have that effect!

Re: W108 Mercedes 280SE diesel conversion project
Thanks Terry, it goes forwards too! Brett, if you can find me a 2.82 ring & pinion from a 6.3L car, I'll use it :) I have looked into changing the ratios, I've currently got 3.46:1 which I think is the taller of the readily available ones. I'm just going to put big wheels on to see what it's like. ...

Re: W108 Mercedes 280SE diesel conversion project

Plumbing has been a large part of the work, there was quite a list: Feed for clutch master cylinder Intercooler Oil cooler Radiator Power steering Oil pressure gauge Temperature gauge The clutch master cylinder was ...

Odd alternator behavior
Hi guys, I hope someone can help me. I've installed an alternator from a 1999 Mercedes e300 diesel into a 1971 280SE. I have removed the regulator from the original setup as it's built into the new alternator. There are only 2 terminals on the back of the new alternator. I have connected the indicat...
