Good stuff, enjoying this. Does this engine have valve stem seals on the intake valves? If so, you'd be wise to replace them as you're pulling all the valves anyway. Just mention it as it looks to me like that engine has burnt a bit of oil in its time - not critical, but not perfect either. Cheers :D
Re: Welder.
Can't really recommend one, I've had mine around 20 years now. Suggest you just research reviews etc. and don't forget the golden rule in life - you will generally get what you pay for.

What sort of mask are you using? I can strongly recommend a photo-reactive one (not sure what the correct term is) that darkens ONLY when the arc is happening, before and after striking the arc it's pretty clear. That bike is amazing - talk about brought back from the brink!
I'd love to see more pics of the resto and hear the full story, where did you get the bits for example? Is that an early Villiers engine? I vaguely remember that James used Villiers, amongst a number of other manufacturers of the time.

Re: Wobbly calipers.
Wobbly in what way? Which bit is "wobbling" ? Need more detail mate!
What type of calipers are they (by which I mean do they slide on stainless steel pins i.e. single piston type or are they fixed solid to the caliper carrier and have double pistons) - pics would help!

Anyway, I hope to post a bit now and again, not doing a lot with cars these days as we left Scotland ...

Ooh, I love those, my dad and several family friends had one back in my yoof.
That cabin's a lovely place to be isn't it? What model is it. 90, 100 or 110?
I'll be watching this with interest!
