For anyone else that has a MK5 golf, a normal OBDII reader won't work, but you can use the free version of the carista app to read your faults. you have to pay for it to clear them.

Dash is out, car is running :) 5 wires going to the engine on the right hand side behind the relay block were responsible for the non-starting issue. I'll take a snap of my new almost completed car house in the light tomorrow. I may replace the loom, It depends how much damage there is once i get the dash out so i can get a proper look. A few connectors spliced don't bother me, so far barring 2 wires, all the damage has been right next to connect...

I use "blue Spot" ones from ebay. They don't have any difficulty cutting through 4mm chassis steel or 1.5mm bodywork stuff. They aren't expensive and work well.
