Re: Alvis TA-14 restoration story so far
Just been through replacing all the photobucket links. Thanks photobucket!! For anyone who's interested, I used Amazon's free AWS S3 storage. https://aws.amazon.com/s3/ It's only free for a year but rates are reasonable after that. It was nice to go through the thread again though. The car is still ...

Re: W108 Mercedes 280SE diesel conversion project
Would you believe there's more chopping and welding still going on?! Anyway, I've also been very slowly working on the interior. I'm coming to the end of the work on the door cards so I thought I'd put together all the photos of the process. My main reason for starting into the door cards at all was...

Grinder discs, which ones are best?
Hello folks, Just wondering if anyone has an opinion on which manufacturer's cutting discs last longest/preform best? At the moment I'm looking at buying a bulk quantity of the super-thin 1mm variety but I don't want to buy a heap of rubbish ones. In my experience there are definitely some that seem...

Re: W108 Mercedes 280SE diesel conversion project
Hi, There has been activity but it's not the most interesting stuff. Activity at the moment involves attacking small-ish areas of the car one at a time and working through the following process: 1. Blast off all old paint, filler and rust 2. Chop out rust and previous crappy repairs 3. Cut and form ...

Re: W108 Mercedes 280SE diesel conversion project
Things have slowed down over the Summer but the wife's Summer job has come to an end and hopefully I'll have a little more time now to put into it, things are already starting to move again. The focus at the moment is on the bodywork. There is a bit of a combination of replacing previous bodging as ...

Re: Lacquering wood
This is interesting. I'm currently stripping a whole load of wood trim from the Mercedes for re-coating. I've bought some expensive yacht varnish. I'll post up results once I get to the painting stage. I was sold on the yacht stuff because of alleged UV resistance and the fact that it would remain f...

Re: W108 Mercedes 280SE diesel conversion project
An annoyance but not a disaster. Have you tried a disposable in line filter on the gun? No, and I definitely should try one. Might these fish eyes be a sign of there being silicon around the place? It doesn't take much, especially not when the paint you're trying to apply is straight onto steel. Ha...

Re: W108 Mercedes 280SE diesel conversion project
I think that this project might have moved on from just being a diesel conversion project :) You're right Alabbasi, it's be come a "now or never" restoration too! If I put it on the road as-is, I'd never strip it all down to preserve it properly. There's some metalwork underway!! I sprayed some sat...

Re: Automatic up and over garage door openers. Reviews?
Thanks for all the feedback guys. @JPB, You're right, driving is a better way to warm it up, as would be an engine heater! @TerryG, my garage is very private and at the bottom of my garden, so security is not a particular concern. Getting wet is, though, and I'm sure I'll be more likely to be bother...
