A snapped cable on the current mechanical winch yesterday means that a replacement is needed. Why just replace the cable when there seems to be decent electrical winches out there for £100 or so. Mine used to leak power steering fluid. It was a result of my own numptiness. I topped up with the wrong fluid, I used regular power steering fluid
