Re: Automatic Transmission harsh shifting.
Hi, I followed the advice of fluhing the gearbox, unfortunately with no improvement. The fluid used has always been a Dexron III type. Originally GM prescribed Dexron II, but when that became Dexron III, they claimed that it should pose no problem to use the new fluid. Generally, older Rolls Royces ...

Re: Automatic Transmission harsh shifting.
Thanks everyone for the help. Kevin, I checked the fluid level on several occasions and it was always spot on. During the rebuild I tried to drain the torque converter as good as I could but you just can't really empty it. So it might be an idea to flush the whole system. Certainly worth a try. The ...

Automatic Transmission harsh shifting.
The automatic transmission ( a GM TH400) on my 1979 Rolls Royce Silver Shadow had developped some problems. It was leaking oil and the shift from 1st to 2nd was a bit harsh, unless I released the throttle a bit. I rebuild the transmission, which went well. All the leaks have dissapeared (apart from ...

Re: Noisy relay
I managed to solve the problem.
It was indeed, as Bob suggested, a faulty oil pressure sensor.
Thanks for your help.

Noisy relay
My 1979 Rolls Royce Silver Shadow has recently developped following fault : With the automatic transmission in D or R, engine running and no throtlle (so foot on the brake or letting the car creep forward without touching the throttle) there is a loud rattling sound coming from behind the speedomete...

Re: Axle stand warning
I use axle stands quite often, but always make sure to have a second pair as back-up. This second pair is placed under the car (ususally somewhere between suspension components so they can't fall over) but slightly lower as not to support the car. In the event of the car sliding of the first set of ...

Re: Brake noise on full lock
That is an interesting remark : I had the tracking on the car done a few months ago and, while I'm not entirely sure, the grinding noise started more or less in that period.
I will check with the front wheels of the ground and also check for rubbing marks.

Re: Brake noise on full lock
Wheel bearings worn allowing the discs to touch the calipers or backplate? Do R-R bearings wear? :) Unfortunately, R-R pars wear just as quickly as on other cars :( The bearings seem to be OK, with no play or strange noises. Also, it would till not explain why it only happens when braking at low sp...

Re: Brake noise on full lock
Maybe, but it sounds more like metal on metal and only occurs when braking.harvey wrote:Suspension bushes worn allowing the tyre to rub on something.

Brake noise on full lock
I own a 1979 Rolls Royce Silver Shadow which has developped folowing problem : with the steering on full lock (left or right) and then braking (even lightly), there is a loud, grinding noise coming from the front. The moment I release the brakes or when straightening the steering, the noise stops im...
